One study found that people with diabetes who took GLP-1 drugs were at a higher risk of developing macular degeneration. Other reports have linked certain GLP-1 medications to a rare eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy.
Some users have reported unexpected pregnancies while taking these medications. However, there is not enough solid research to confirm a direct link between the drugs and pregnancy. Health authorities in the UK have warned that GLP-1 medicines should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.
Social media is full of posts showing how facial appearance can change after using these drugs. Users have described sunken eyes, increased wrinkles, and sagging skin as side effects of the treatment.
Hair loss has also become a topic of concern recently. A recent study suggested that hair thinning could be connected to GLP-1 medications in adults with type 2 diabetes. Experts have said more research is needed to understand the full scope of this issue.
It’s not just the face that may change after rapid weight loss. One study found that people who had sleeve gastrectomy surgery often ended up wearing smaller shoe sizes.
