The ChatGPT developer completes the first stage of a new private investment round after reducing its original fundraising target and delaying plans for a public offering.

OpenAI has secured approximately $11 billion in new funding at a valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to reports published Friday, November 6, 2026. The investment represents the first completed portion of a larger fundraising round as the company behind ChatGPT continues expanding its artificial intelligence business.

The money was transferred to OpenAI by Friday, according to people familiar with the transaction. The company could ultimately raise as much as $20 billion through the round, although further investments have not been finalized.

The reported valuation marks a substantial increase from March, when OpenAI announced $122 billion in committed financing at a valuation of $852 billion. However, the latest transaction falls short of the company’s original ambition to raise at least $30 billion at an estimated $1.4 trillion valuation.

OpenAI has declined to comment on the new financing. The figures therefore remain based on information from people familiar with the private transaction rather than a formal company announcement.

OpenAI Completes First Stage of Funding Round

Bloomberg News first reported the latest investment, citing people familiar with the financing who requested anonymity because the details had not been made public.

According to the report, the initial $11 billion has already been transferred, while additional fundraising discussions are continuing. The company expects to complete the remaining portion of the round in the coming weeks.

Investors participating in the first stage reportedly include Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price. Other financial backers associated with the fundraising include SoftBank Group, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz.

A group of investors from the United Arab Emirates has also been linked to the transaction. The reported participation reflects continued interest from major financial institutions and international investors in companies developing advanced artificial intelligence systems.

Reuters separately reported the $11 billion investment and $1.25 trillion valuation. The news agency also noted that the fundraising target had been reduced from earlier expectations.

Neither report established that the full $20 billion had been secured. The amount represents a possible final total rather than completed financing.

OpenAI is also reportedly working with investment banks to attract additional capital from wealthy individuals and retail investors. Details about those arrangements, including their structure and eligibility requirements, have not been publicly confirmed.

Funding Target Reduced as AI Investment Climate Changes

The latest financing comes during a difficult period for technology companies heavily involved in artificial intelligence. Investors have become increasingly concerned about the enormous infrastructure spending required to develop and operate advanced models.

Building AI systems requires specialized processors, large data centers, reliable electricity supplies and substantial computing resources. Those costs can remain high even as companies generate growing revenue from subscriptions and business services.

Earlier fundraising discussions reportedly involved a target of $30 billion or more. The company was seeking a valuation of approximately $1.4 trillion before scaling back its expectations.

The newly reported $1.25 trillion valuation is roughly 11% below that earlier target. Nevertheless, it represents an increase of approximately 47% from the $852 billion valuation announced in March.

The comparison illustrates two developments taking place simultaneously. OpenAI continues to attract substantial private investment, but the terms of its financing have become more conservative than initially anticipated.

The amount raised so far is also smaller than the company’s unusually large March funding announcement. However, the $11 billion represents only the first portion of the latest round, making a direct comparison between the two completed transactions premature.

Investors are paying closer attention to whether AI companies can eventually generate enough earnings to justify their valuations and infrastructure commitments. That scrutiny has intensified as financial markets reassess the costs and expected returns of large-scale AI development.

March Fundraising Established an Earlier Milestone

OpenAI announced on March 31 that it had closed a financing round involving $122 billion in committed capital at a post-money valuation of $852 billion.

That investment was among the largest private funding announcements in technology history. It reflected expectations that artificial intelligence would become increasingly important to businesses, software developers and consumers.

In its March announcement, OpenAI described computing capacity as a central competitive advantage. The company argued that investment in infrastructure would support improved models, product development and broader access to its services.

ChatGPT remains one of the company’s most recognizable products. OpenAI also provides technology to businesses through its application programming interfaces and offers tools designed to assist with software development.

Products such as Codex have expanded the company’s presence beyond conversational applications. These services are part of a broader effort to establish recurring revenue from businesses and professional users.

The March financing announcement emphasized growth across consumer products, enterprise services and developer tools. The new investment suggests that major financial backers continue to see commercial opportunities in those markets.

However, the private valuation is not the same as a publicly traded market capitalization. OpenAI shares do not trade on a major public stock exchange, and the reported figure reflects the terms of a private financing transaction.

Initial Public Offering Plans Remain Uncertain

The latest fundraising follows reports that OpenAI has postponed plans for an initial public offering. A public listing would allow investors to buy and sell shares through a stock exchange and would introduce new financial reporting requirements.

OpenAI has not announced a confirmed IPO date. The company has also declined to provide further details about its public-market plans in connection with the November financing.

Bloomberg reported that discussions about raising additional private capital began more than a month ago after the company delayed its anticipated stock market debut.

The decision to pursue private funding provides an alternative source of capital while management evaluates future options. It does not establish that OpenAI has abandoned the possibility of becoming publicly traded.

A successful IPO could eventually provide access to a wider group of investors. However, its timing, valuation and financing structure would depend on circumstances that have not yet been determined.

For now, the company can continue raising money through private transactions without immediately exposing its shares to daily stock market trading.

That approach also allows existing and prospective investors to negotiate financing terms directly. Those terms may differ from the pricing and disclosures required during a public offering.

Anthropic Faces Similar Investor Scrutiny

OpenAI is not the only artificial intelligence company confronting changing expectations about valuations. Rival Anthropic, developer of the Claude family of AI models, has also been the subject of reports involving revised investor expectations.

Financial discussions surrounding Anthropic’s possible public offering have reflected concerns about the rapidly growing cost of AI infrastructure. Potential investors are examining whether future earnings can support the valuations sought by leading private technology companies.

The two companies compete across several areas, including consumer assistants, business AI services and tools for software developers.

Both need substantial computing resources to train and operate advanced models. Their ability to finance that infrastructure will influence how quickly they can expand their products and serve additional customers.

Investor concerns also extend beyond individual companies. The construction of data centers has attracted greater attention because of electricity demand, water consumption and the potential effects on surrounding communities.

Following the November U.S. midterm elections, some investors have become more cautious about possible restrictions on future data center development. Changes in regulation or construction approvals could affect expansion plans throughout the industry.

Those concerns do not establish that OpenAI or Anthropic will be unable to finance their operations. They do, however, help explain why financial markets are examining AI investments more carefully.

What the New Investment Means for OpenAI

The reported $11 billion provides another substantial source of financing as OpenAI continues developing its technology and expanding its commercial services.

The company’s ability to attract backing from established investment firms and international investors indicates that demand for exposure to AI development remains significant despite the broader market uncertainty.

At the same time, the reduced fundraising target suggests that investors are becoming more selective about the prices they are prepared to pay.

A private valuation of $1.25 trillion places OpenAI among the world’s most highly valued privately held technology companies. The figure represents investor expectations, however, rather than a guaranteed measure of future earnings or stock market performance.

OpenAI has not disclosed the complete financing terms, the amount committed by each participant or a timetable for a public listing.

The next important development will be whether the company secures the remaining capital needed to bring the round toward its reported $20 billion target. Until additional investments are finalized, the $11 billion received by November 6 remains the reported amount completed.
