A private jet traveling from Texas to the Bahamas plunged into a residential area of Palm Beach County on November 1, killing everyone aboard and forcing hundreds of nearby residents to evacuate.

Nine people were killed Sunday, November 1, 2026, when a private Learjet 60 crashed near a busy roadway in Palm Beach County, Florida. The aircraft plunged toward the ground shortly before 1 p.m., striking pavement near a residential neighborhood and erupting into a massive fireball.

The jet had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. All nine people aboard were killed, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, while authorities reported no confirmed deaths or injuries on the ground during their initial response.

The crash occurred near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, close to Greenacres and Lake Worth Beach. Federal investigators are examining the aircraft’s rapid descent, weather conditions and communications with air traffic controllers to determine what caused the disaster.

Jet Plunges Toward Residential Neighborhood

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Learjet 60 crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m. Eastern time. Its final moments were captured on video by motorists traveling near the crash site.

Footage showed the aircraft descending sharply before striking the ground and exploding. A large fireball rose from the impact site, followed by thick black smoke that could be seen from surrounding neighborhoods.

The crash left a substantial crater in the pavement along Military Trail. Debris scattered across the roadway and nearby residential property, creating additional hazards for emergency crews.

Witnesses described hearing an unusually loud explosion. Some initially believed the noise came from thunder because storms were moving through the area.

Nearby resident Anthony Blackmon told NBC 6 South Florida that he was approximately 500 feet from the impact. He described debris striking his home and flames spreading around the roadway.

Other witnesses said the jet appeared to narrowly miss passing vehicles and nearby houses. Photographs from the scene showed damaged pavement, emergency vehicles and debris across a large area.

The crash disrupted one of the community’s major roads. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office closed Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North while emergency crews secured the scene.

Nine Victims Confirmed Dead

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed Sunday afternoon that all nine people aboard the jet had died. He offered condolences to their relatives and said federal aviation authorities were responding to assist the investigation.

The identities of the victims had not been publicly released as of Sunday evening. Officials had also not announced how many passengers and crew members were aboard separately.

The aircraft was registered as N722BD, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. The registration identified a Delaware-based company as the owner, although that information did not establish who was operating the aircraft at the time.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport spokesperson Jim Reynolds confirmed that the flight was a private aircraft. Airport officials did not immediately provide additional details about the passengers or the purpose of the trip.

The destination, North Eleuthera Airport, serves part of the Bahamas and receives private aviation traffic from the United States. Investigators have not identified any connection between the intended destination and the circumstances of the crash.

Authorities initially focused on securing the impact site and determining whether people on the ground had been hurt. During a Sunday news conference, local officials said they had received no reports of ground fatalities or injuries.

That preliminary assessment was encouraging given the proximity of the impact to homes and moving vehicles. However, emergency teams still needed to inspect the surrounding area and assess property damage.

Aircraft Reported Turbulence and Ice

Weather conditions are receiving attention because thunderstorms and heavy rain were reported across parts of Palm Beach County around the time of the crash. Investigators have not established whether those conditions caused or contributed to the accident.

According to air traffic control communications reviewed by Reuters, the pilots reported encountering ice and moderate turbulence while flying at high altitude. The crew sought a change in altitude to find smoother conditions.

The aircraft later experienced an extremely rapid descent. Flight-tracking information indicated that its vertical speed increased dramatically before the signal was lost.

Reuters reported that the cockpit crew issued an emergency call as the situation deteriorated. The pilot reported that the aircraft was descending uncontrollably and warned that a crash was imminent.

The reported communications suggest the crew recognized a serious emergency before impact. They do not establish whether the underlying problem involved weather, aircraft systems, pilot response or a combination of factors.

Flight-tracking data also showed an unusually steep descent shortly before the crash. CNN reported that the aircraft lost approximately 27,000 feet in about one minute before tracking information ended.

Those measurements are preliminary and will require examination alongside more detailed evidence. Tracking services can provide valuable information about an aircraft’s movement, but they are not a substitute for a complete accident investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board will examine available flight records, weather information, maintenance documentation and communications with air traffic control. Investigators will also study the wreckage for indications of structural damage or equipment failure.

Hundreds Evacuated From Nearby Community

The accident forced authorities to relocate residents from a nearby mobile home community while the investigation and emergency response continued. Palm Beach County officials said approximately 600 people could be affected by the evacuation.

Two emergency shelters were prepared to accommodate displaced residents. Palm Tran, the county’s public transportation service, was also available to help move people once investigators authorized access.

The evacuation created difficulties for residents who were unable to return home to collect clothing, medication and other personal belongings. Some families were left uncertain about when they would be allowed back into the neighborhood.

Local officials said the crash site would remain restricted because of the extensive debris field and federal investigation. Residents were advised to follow instructions from emergency personnel rather than attempt to enter closed areas.

The accident also caused electrical interruptions in nearby neighborhoods. Utility crews from Florida Power & Light responded to assess damage and restore service where possible.

Officials warned that portions of Military Trail could remain closed for an extended period. The impact left a large crater, and the road cannot reopen until investigators complete necessary work and engineers determine that repairs are safe.

Motorists were encouraged to use alternate routes, including Haverhill Road and Kirk Road for north-south travel. Local authorities said additional traffic arrangements would be announced as conditions changed.

John I. Leonard High School was also scheduled to close Monday because of the crash response and continuing restrictions around the area.

Governor DeSantis Visits Crash Scene

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis visited the site Sunday and described the accident as a catastrophic event. He said the jet appeared to have descended almost vertically before striking the ground.

DeSantis praised firefighters, law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel for responding quickly. He also acknowledged the seriousness of the wreckage and the danger posed to nearby residents.

The governor said the extensive debris field would complicate recovery and investigative work. He emphasized that federal investigators would determine what happened to the aircraft.

Palm Beach County emergency services continued coordinating with law enforcement and federal agencies throughout the afternoon and evening. Their immediate responsibilities included maintaining the perimeter, assisting displaced families and preventing additional injuries.

Federal Investigators Examine Cause of Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration. The NTSB announced that a team of aviation accident specialists was being sent to Florida.

Investigators planned to arrive Sunday evening and Monday morning. An initial media briefing was expected in West Palm Beach on Monday, although the agency had not immediately announced a specific time.

The investigation will examine the aircraft’s flight path, its mechanical condition and the actions taken by the pilots. Weather information will also be reviewed to determine what conditions the jet encountered before losing altitude.

Bombardier, the manufacturer of the Learjet 60, said it would cooperate with the investigation. Manufacturer assistance can include technical records, aircraft design information and expertise concerning particular systems.

Investigators may also interview witnesses, examine surveillance recordings and reconstruct the aircraft’s final movements. Any available cockpit recording equipment and electronic flight information could provide additional evidence.

A preliminary NTSB report may identify factual information collected during the early investigation. Determining the probable cause generally requires a more extensive examination and may take considerably longer.

For now, the central questions remain unanswered: why the aircraft descended so suddenly, whether weather played a role and what prevented the pilots from regaining control.

Authorities are also working to identify the nine victims and notify their families. The NTSB’s next public update is expected to provide additional information about the investigation and recovery operations.
