Ireland Beat Argentina 42-12 as Andy Farrell Demands More Ruthlessness

Ireland delivered an impressive attacking performance to defeat Argentina 42-12 in the Nations Championship on Friday, November 6, 2026, at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Full-back Hugo Keenan scored three of Ireland’s six tries, but head coach Andy Farrell believes his team missed opportunities to secure an even more convincing victory.

The result gave Ireland a bonus-point win against a dangerous Argentina side and strengthened their position in the international competition. Farrell praised the quality of his players’ attacking combinations while expressing frustration that Ireland failed to score again after the 55th minute.

The victory also came with several injury concerns. Robert Baloucoune, Sean Jansen, Mack Hansen and Josh van der Flier were among those requiring attention, while captain Dan Sheehan left the match for a head injury assessment.

Farrell Praises Ireland but Wants More

Farrell acknowledged the strength of Ireland’s performance during his post-match news conference. The coach was particularly pleased with the attacking moves that allowed his team to break through Argentina’s defense.

However, Ireland’s failure to add to their score during the final 25 minutes remained a concern.

“I think the story of the game is we missed a chance to be ruthless,” Farrell said.

The head coach explained that Ireland had created enough opportunities in dangerous areas to score more points. Although he was satisfied with the overall result, he believed better execution could have produced another two or three tries.

Farrell also recognized that Argentina had presented a difficult challenge, particularly during the opening stages. The visitors threatened Ireland with powerful forward play and dangerous attacking movements before the home side established control.

Ireland’s defense limited Argentina to 12 points, something Farrell considered especially encouraging. The Pumas have established a reputation for challenging leading international teams, making the 30-point winning margin a significant achievement.

According to RTÉ Sport, Farrell described Ireland’s attacking execution as impressive while acknowledging the need to maintain that standard throughout an entire match. His comments reflected both satisfaction with the result and a desire for continued improvement.

Hugo Keenan Leads Ireland With Three Tries

Keenan produced the standout individual performance, scoring a hat-trick on his return to international rugby at Aviva Stadium after a lengthy absence.

The full-back had not played for Ireland at the Dublin venue for approximately 21 months. His return provided a major boost to a backline that combined speed, accurate passing and intelligent movement.

Keenan scored his first try after Ireland responded to Argentina’s early lead. Robert Baloucoune made an important break before passing to Mack Hansen, who delivered a well-timed offload to the advancing full-back.

The movement demonstrated the attacking understanding between the three players. Keenan completed the move by crossing the try line, with Sam Prendergast adding the conversion.

Keenan’s second try came later in the first half after Ireland capitalized on another attacking opportunity. Ryan Baird disrupted an Argentina lineout, allowing the Irish backs to move the ball across the field.

Keenan received possession on the outside before cutting through the defense and beating several opponents to score. The try helped Ireland establish a commanding 21-5 halftime advantage.

His third arrived shortly after Argentina had reduced the deficit early in the second half. Ireland created space through a series of passes, with Baird providing the final delivery that allowed Keenan to complete his hat-trick.

The performance earned Keenan the Player of the Match award. Farrell praised his return and said the full-back had brought considerable energy and quality to Ireland’s attacking play.

Ireland Recover From Argentina’s Early Lead

Argentina began strongly and took the lead in the 10th minute through winger Mateo Carreras. The visitors created space with a cross-field kick from fly-half Tomás Albornoz, allowing Carreras to finish in the corner.

Ireland responded quickly through Keenan’s opening try. Captain Dan Sheehan then extended the advantage with a powerful close-range finish after Ireland applied pressure near Argentina’s try line.

Keenan added his second before halftime to give the hosts a 21-5 lead.

Ireland continued their attacking momentum immediately after the restart. Prendergast produced an outstanding individual run, breaking through the Argentina defense from approximately 45 meters to score his first international try.

The score secured Ireland’s attacking bonus point, but Argentina briefly responded. Carreras crossed for his second try of the evening, demonstrating that the visitors remained dangerous when given space.

Keenan’s third try restored Ireland’s control. Replacement hooker Rónan Kelleher then completed the scoring in the 55th minute after Ireland’s forwards drove over from a lineout maul.

Ciarán Frawley converted the final try, taking Ireland’s total to 42 points.

Despite having further opportunities, Ireland could not add to their advantage. Argentina also experienced disciplinary problems, with Justo Piccardo and Efraín Elías receiving yellow cards during the contest.

Ireland replacement Sam Illo was later sent to the sin bin as the home side defended against renewed pressure. Both teams continued competing until the closing stages, but the score remained unchanged.

Injuries Create Concerns Ahead of Fiji Match

Ireland’s victory was accompanied by several fitness concerns that could influence selection for their remaining November fixtures.

Baloucoune left the field during the second half after experiencing discomfort. Farrell said the medical staff were examining the winger, although the precise nature of the problem had not been established.

Jansen also suffered a knee injury during the match. Farrell described the problem as a knock but said additional medical assessments would be needed before its significance could be determined.

Hansen and van der Flier experienced ankle-related problems but were able to continue playing. Their conditions will also be monitored as Ireland prepare for their next international appearance.

Sheehan’s withdrawal created another concern. The captain left the field before halftime for a head injury assessment and did not return, although Farrell said the hooker appeared comfortable in the dressing room afterward.

The medical updates will be important because Ireland have a demanding schedule ahead. The coaches must determine which players are available while considering opportunities for squad members who have impressed in training.

Ireland’s Backline Gives Farrell Selection Options

One of the most encouraging aspects of Ireland’s performance was the understanding between Keenan, Baloucoune and Hansen. The three players repeatedly threatened Argentina with their running ability and intelligent supporting movements.

Farrell described the back three as outstanding, praising their speed and willingness to attack space. The opening try was an example of how effectively they could combine when moving the ball quickly.

The head coach also acknowledged the contributions of scrum-half Craig Casey and flanker Nick Timoney. Both were given important starting opportunities and responded with energetic performances.

Prendergast provided another encouraging display at fly-half, controlling attacking moves while contributing a try and five successful conversions. His performance strengthened his case for further appearances in the position.

Ireland’s forward unit also played an important role. Baird repeatedly disrupted Argentina’s lineout, while Andrew Porter, Joe McCarthy and Tadhg Beirne helped establish a strong physical platform.

Farrell said the competition for places was exactly what he wanted from his squad. He explained that the players had worked hard during training and that their performances reflected the intensity of those preparations.

Fiji and South Africa Provide Further Tests

Ireland’s victory moved them to the top of the Northern Hemisphere Nations Championship standings overnight. The competition has brought together leading teams from both hemispheres, with results contributing to qualification for the finals later in November.

The next challenge comes against Fiji at Aviva Stadium on Saturday, November 14. Ireland will then welcome world champions South Africa to Dublin on November 21.

Those matches will test whether Ireland can maintain the attacking accuracy displayed against Argentina. South Africa, in particular, will provide a demanding examination of Ireland’s physical strength, defensive organization and ability to convert opportunities.

Farrell must also balance the need for consistency with the fitness problems that emerged during Friday’s victory. The availability of Baloucoune, Jansen, Hansen, van der Flier and Sheehan will become clearer following medical assessments.

Ireland have demonstrated that they can combine individual attacking brilliance with strong collective performances. Their next challenge is to sustain that level throughout matches while reducing the number of scoring chances left unused.

For Farrell, the Argentina victory provided an encouraging start to the November home fixtures. The immediate priority is preparing a fit and competitive squad for Fiji, with the much-anticipated meeting against South Africa still to follow.
