Apple iPhone Duo Shortages Continue Despite Production Increase

Apple says its first foldable iPhone remains in short supply, with some customers facing delivery dates in January 2027 as strong demand and rising component costs put pressure on its supply chain.

Apple is increasing production of its new iPhone Duo, but customers are still facing lengthy delivery delays as demand for the company’s first foldable smartphone exceeds available inventory. Some orders are now scheduled for delivery in January 2027, and Apple executives say they cannot predict when production will catch up with demand.

The supply problem was confirmed during Apple’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call on Monday, November 2, 2026. Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan acknowledged that the manufacturing increase was progressing but said the company continued to face shortages.

The iPhone Duo launched on October 23 after preorders began October 16. Within hours of preorders opening, delivery estimates for several configurations moved beyond the holiday shopping season and into next year.

Apple Cannot Predict When iPhone Duo Supply Will Recover

During the earnings call, Khan told analysts that Apple was pleased with the initial response to its new foldable phone. He also acknowledged that customers would have to contend with limited availability.

Khan said production was increasing and that Apple was working to deliver devices as quickly as possible. However, he cautioned that the company could not provide a reliable estimate for when inventory would meet demand.

The uncertainty reflects a difficult situation for a product that represents Apple’s largest smartphone design change in years. The company must expand production while dealing with unusually strong customer interest and pressure across the electronics supply chain.

Unlike a conventional smartphone, the iPhone Duo uses a folding display, precision-engineered hinge and specialized internal components. These features require manufacturing processes that differ from those used for traditional iPhone models.

Apple has not disclosed how many iPhone Duo units were available at launch or how many customers have placed orders. Without those figures, the long delivery estimates cannot be used to determine exact sales volumes.

Nevertheless, the delays show that available inventory has been insufficient to satisfy orders at the pace customers are placing them.

Preorders Push Delivery Dates Into January 2027

Apple opened iPhone Duo preorders at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on October 16. Demand quickly overwhelmed the initial online inventory, with shipping estimates moving from the October launch period into November and December.

By later that morning, Apple’s online store was displaying estimated delivery dates in late January 2027 for some orders. MacRumors reported that every available configuration was showing a January 25 shipping estimate shortly after preorders began.

The delays affected customers selecting different colors and storage capacities. The widespread shortage suggests that limited availability was not confined to a single version of the phone.

Customers who ordered immediately or secured devices through retail stores had a better opportunity to receive their phones near the original launch date. Those who waited have faced considerably longer delivery estimates.

Apple’s retail stores began selling the device October 23, with customers lining up at locations around the world. Company executives greeted buyers at stores in Austin, Texas, and New York City as the new model reached the public.

Although some stores received inventory for launch-day purchases, availability varied by location. Customers seeking immediate delivery were encouraged to check individual stores and authorized retailers rather than rely solely on online shipping estimates.

Verizon Offers Gift Cards After Shipping Delays

The shortage has also affected wireless carriers that accepted iPhone Duo preorders. Verizon apologized after some customers received notices that their previously scheduled deliveries would be delayed.

According to MacRumors, Verizon offered affected customers a $100 gift card as compensation. The cards could be used toward purchases or bill payments through the carrier.

Verizon told customers that their orders remained secure and that their places in the delivery queue had not changed. The company also said it was tracking delayed shipments and working to fulfill orders.

The situation illustrates how inventory shortages can affect retailers even when they have accepted preorders. Carriers may receive fewer devices than anticipated, requiring them to revise delivery schedules after customers have completed their purchases.

Not every Verizon customer was necessarily eligible for compensation. The reported offer applied to customers affected by the carrier’s unexpected shipping delays.

AI Industry Demand Adds Pressure to Apple’s Supply Chain

The iPhone Duo shortage comes during a period of rising demand for advanced electronics components. Artificial intelligence companies are purchasing large quantities of memory chips and other hardware to expand their data centers.

That competition has contributed to tighter supplies and increased prices across the technology industry. Consumer electronics manufacturers are facing greater pressure as suppliers respond to demand from companies building AI infrastructure.

Apple experienced supply constraints affecting iPhones, Macs and iPads during its September quarter. Khan said limited availability of advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity had been an important factor.

The company is gradually easing some processor-related constraints as more products move to newer 2-nanometer manufacturing technology. However, Apple expects memory availability to remain a concern for Macs and iPads during the December quarter.

The distinction is important because Apple has not established that memory shortages are the direct cause of every iPhone Duo delivery delay. The foldable phone faces its own production requirements while the broader company deals with component costs and capacity limitations.

Apple’s financial results also demonstrate the scale of these pressures. The company reported quarterly revenue of $114.5 billion, an increase of 12% from the previous year, while acknowledging that supply conditions were less flexible than normal.

Apple Expands U.S. Titanium Supply Partnership

Apple is also strengthening manufacturing partnerships to secure materials used in its newest products. On October 20, the company announced an expanded agreement with Pennsylvania-based titanium supplier Perryman Company.

Under the arrangement, Apple plans to commit up to $100 million over three years to support titanium production. The material will be used in products including the iPhone Duo.

Perryman manufactures specialized titanium at its facility in Houston, Pennsylvania. The material supplied for the iPhone Duo contains at least 80% recycled content.

The foldable phone features a grade 5 titanium enclosure designed to provide strength without excessive weight. Its hinge cover is also manufactured using advanced titanium production techniques.

Apple’s investment supports its broader American Manufacturing Program, which aims to expand domestic production of important components. The company works with suppliers across numerous states to produce materials, chips, glass and other technologies.

The Perryman agreement may strengthen long-term sourcing, but Apple has not said that the investment will immediately resolve iPhone Duo shortages.

iPhone Duo Brings Apple’s First Foldable Design

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable smartphone and one of the company’s most expensive consumer devices. Prices begin at $1,999 in the United States, placing it above conventional iPhone models.

The device features a 5.4-inch external screen and a 7.6-inch internal display. Users can operate it as a compact smartphone when closed or open it for a larger viewing and multitasking experience.

Apple equipped the phone with its A20 Pro processor, a dual-battery system and a redesigned thermal management system. The foldable format also introduces different ways to use the camera and display applications side by side.

The device is available in star white and night sky, with storage configurations ranging from 256GB to 2TB. Its titanium construction and specialized hinge are designed to support repeated folding while maintaining a slim profile.

Apple CEO John Ternus has described the Duo as a major transformation of the iPhone lineup. Its introduction gives the company a presence in the premium foldable smartphone category, where other manufacturers have already established competing products.

Holiday Demand Could Keep Inventory Tight

The ongoing delays create uncertainty for customers hoping to purchase the iPhone Duo during the holiday shopping season. Online orders placed now may not arrive before Christmas if the existing delivery estimates remain unchanged.

Demand could increase as holiday promotions begin and wireless carriers advertise financing or trade-in offers. At the same time, expanding production may gradually improve availability for selected models or markets.

Apple has not announced a date when normal shipping times will resume. Customers may see delivery estimates change as additional production becomes available and orders move through the distribution network.

Retail inventory could also differ from online availability, particularly when stores receive smaller shipments. Buyers seeking the device sooner may find opportunities through local stores or authorized carriers, although stock is not guaranteed.

For now, Apple’s manufacturing increase has not eliminated the shortage. The company’s next challenge is delivering enough iPhone Duo units to meet customer demand while managing rising component costs and supply pressures across its wider product lineup.
