White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Leaves After Just One Week

First press briefing of Katie Zacharia
By Digital News Editorial Team on October 16, 2026

Trump’s newly appointed spokeswoman departs following questions about her legal credentials and a difficult first briefing. The president says he encouraged her to reconsider the position.

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia is leaving her position just one week after President Donald Trump announced her appointment. Her departure on Friday, October 16, 2026, followed growing scrutiny of her legal credentials and criticism of her first appearance before the White House press corps.

The administration confirmed that Zacharia was transitioning out of the press secretary role after Trump publicly suggested she reconsider the job. She had been appointed October 9 to replace Karoline Leavitt, who left the position in August.

Zacharia’s departure marks one of the shortest tenures for a White House press secretary. Her time in the position included a single formal briefing, several television interviews and questions about her previous descriptions of herself as a lawyer.

Trump Urged Katie Zacharia to Reconsider White House Role

President Trump discussed Zacharia’s future with reporters Friday before leaving the White House for a political rally in Georgia.

He said he had advised the new press secretary to reconsider whether she wanted to continue in a position that attracted intense public scrutiny.

Trump defended Zacharia personally and criticized the treatment she had received from journalists. He said he wanted her to have a good life and suggested that the position might not be worth the pressure.

The president did not initially describe the situation as a firing. Instead, he presented his comments as advice to someone facing a difficult professional experience.

Later Friday, a person familiar with the personnel decision confirmed that Zacharia would leave the role.

The Associated Press reported that Zacharia subsequently posted a farewell message on social media, describing her opportunity to work for Trump as an honor.

Her statement praised the president and expressed appreciation for the time she spent in the administration.

The White House had not announced a permanent replacement as of Friday evening.

Questions About Katie Zacharia’s Legal Credentials Intensified

Much of the scrutiny surrounding Zacharia concerned her professional background and previous statements about practicing law.

Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law in 2011. She later worked in communications, conservative political organizations and international business-related positions.

Trump described her as an attorney when announcing her appointment, and Zacharia had previously identified herself as a lawyer during television appearances.

However, questions arose after reporters examined whether she had been admitted to practice law in any American jurisdiction.

During an October 15 interview on Fox News, Zacharia acknowledged that she had not passed the California bar examination.

She also confirmed that she had not taken the examination again.

Reuters reported that Zacharia explained she had already planned to move to China with her husband when she took the test in 2011. She said the results were not important to her future plans at that time.

A law degree establishes that someone has completed legal education, but it does not automatically authorize that person to practice law in the United States.

Practicing law generally requires admission to the appropriate state bar or another recognized legal authorization.

Zacharia defended her professional background, saying she had worked in legal-related positions overseas and believed her descriptions of that experience were appropriate.

The available reporting does not establish that she was charged with a crime over her professional credentials.

Sean Hannity Presses Zacharia About Lawyer Claims

The controversy became more prominent when Fox News host Sean Hannity questioned Zacharia during a televised interview Thursday evening.

Hannity asked why she had not simply explained that she attended law school, took the bar examination and later pursued a different career.

He challenged the distinction she drew between being a lawyer and being an attorney, suggesting that viewers would not necessarily recognize the difference.

Zacharia reiterated that she was not serving as a legal adviser to the Trump administration.

She also said she had been hired for her communications experience rather than her ability to practice law.

Her responses did not end the questions surrounding her previous professional descriptions.

CBS News reported that Zacharia had acknowledged failing the California bar examination after earlier public accounts of her background attracted attention.

The controversy also raised broader questions about how senior White House personnel are evaluated before appointment.

However, the press secretary position itself does not require a law degree or a license to practice law.

First White House Press Briefing Lasted Just 14 Minutes

Zacharia’s first official appearance behind the White House podium took place Tuesday, October 13.

The briefing lasted approximately 14 minutes, during which she answered questions from only three reporters.

The journalists represented conservative-leaning or Trump-friendly news organizations.

Her performance drew criticism from commentators who questioned whether she was sufficiently prepared for the demands of the position.

During the briefing, Zacharia also mistakenly referred to her husband as the president before correcting herself.

She later explained that she had received limited preparation time before appearing in front of reporters.

Zacharia said she had been in the position for only a short period and had received her briefing materials that morning.

She also explained that she wanted to keep the session brief because Trump was scheduled to speak with reporters later.

The White House initially defended her performance.

In an official statement published October 13, the administration praised Zacharia’s first briefing and described her as a strong addition to its communications operation.

Despite that public support, she did not conduct another formal White House briefing before her departure.

Who Is Katie Zacharia?

Before joining the White House, Zacharia worked as a senior communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group, the company that operates Truth Social.

She also briefly served in a public affairs position at the Department of Homeland Security during Trump’s second administration.

Her previous experience included television commentary and involvement with conservative political organizations.

Those positions placed her within political and media circles supportive of the president.

Her appointment surprised some White House observers because she had not previously served in the highly visible position of presidential press secretary.

The job requires managing relationships with journalists, explaining administration policies and responding to questions about rapidly changing developments.

The press secretary also frequently represents the administration during periods of domestic and international controversy.

Zacharia’s short tenure demonstrated the difficulties of moving into that role with little preparation time and immediate national attention.

White House Faces Another Communications Leadership Change

Zacharia’s departure creates another leadership transition in the White House communications operation ahead of the November midterm elections.

She replaced Karoline Leavitt, who had served as Trump’s press secretary since the beginning of his second administration.

Leavitt had become a prominent public representative of the White House before leaving the role.

The latest departure prompted comparisons with personnel changes during Trump’s first term.

One frequently cited example is Anthony Scaramucci, who served as White House communications director for just 10 days in 2017.

However, the communications director and press secretary are separate positions with different responsibilities.

Zacharia’s departure after approximately one week makes her tenure exceptionally brief even when compared with previous White House press secretaries.

It also leaves the administration needing someone to manage daily press questions and communicate official positions.

Trump told reporters Friday that several people were interested in the position, but he did not identify a preferred successor.

What Happens Next for the White House Press Secretary Position?

The administration must now choose who will handle press secretary duties following Zacharia’s departure.

The White House communications staff can continue distributing official statements and arranging media appearances while the position is vacant.

Trump may also continue answering questions directly from reporters, a practice he has frequently used throughout his presidency.

It was not immediately clear whether Zacharia would leave the administration entirely or take another position.

Her departure followed several days of criticism, but the White House did not identify a single official reason for the personnel change.

Zacharia maintained that she had been hired for communications work rather than legal representation. Trump continued to defend her personally even as he publicly questioned whether she should remain in the job.
