Reddit Plans Logged-In-Only Experience as Search Traffic Drops Sharply

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announces plans to restrict anonymous browsing as AI-powered search reduces referrals. The company will begin testing the changes outside the United States during late 2026.

Reddit is preparing to require users to sign in to access most of its platform, marking a major departure from its long history of allowing people to browse discussions without an account. CEO Steve Huffman announced the change on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as the company reported a sharp decline in traffic arriving through internet search engines.

The company plans to begin testing a primarily logged-in experience in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter of 2026. Reddit has not announced which countries will participate or when the restrictions will expand worldwide.

The decision follows a substantial reduction in search referrals, particularly from Google, as artificial intelligence changes how people find information online. Reddit reported that search traffic declined by more than one million referrals per week on average during October, raising concerns about its ability to attract visitors who have not signed into an account.

The proposed restrictions would represent one of Reddit’s biggest changes since the platform launched in 2005. For more than two decades, people have generally been able to read public discussions, follow links from search results and explore communities without registering.

Why Reddit Is Moving Toward Mandatory Logins

Huffman outlined several reasons for the new approach in Reddit’s third-quarter shareholder letter and subsequent earnings conference call. He said requiring accounts could improve recommendations, support advertising revenue and make it harder for automated systems to collect Reddit’s content without authorization.

Reddit hosts an enormous collection of user-generated discussions covering subjects ranging from personal finance and technology to hobbies, entertainment and health. That information has become particularly valuable to artificial intelligence companies seeking human-written material for developing and improving their systems.

Huffman said much of the unauthorized collection of Reddit’s data occurs through the platform’s logged-out browsing experience. Requiring authentication would give the company greater control over access to its discussions while helping distinguish ordinary users from automated activity.

The change could also make advertising more effective because registered accounts provide information about interests and engagement patterns. Reddit says signed-in users spend more time on the platform and are more likely to return regularly.

During the earnings call, Huffman acknowledged that restricting access could reduce the number of people who casually visit Reddit. However, he argued that stronger engagement among registered users could outweigh the loss of some anonymous traffic.

Google Search Changes Are Hurting Reddit Traffic

Search engines have historically been an important way for people to discover Reddit. Someone searching for product advice, technical troubleshooting or personal experiences might find a Reddit discussion through Google without ever visiting the platform’s homepage.

That process has become less dependable as Google expands AI-powered search features that summarize information directly on results pages. These tools can answer questions without requiring users to open the websites that originally supplied the information.

According to Reuters, Huffman criticized Google’s AI search experience during Reddit’s earnings call, arguing that its AI Mode was not generating meaningful referral traffic. He described the change as a fundamental shift away from Google’s traditional role in directing users to other websites.

The company said referral traffic weakened substantially during the third quarter, with the decline accelerating toward the end of the reporting period. The effects were most pronounced among logged-out visitors and people accessing Reddit through web browsers.

The decline also affected some registered users because search engines frequently help existing members rediscover discussions and return to Reddit. Losing those referrals can therefore reduce both casual visits and repeat engagement.

Reddit warned that total daily active users could decline by a low-double-digit percentage during the fourth quarter if the current referral trend continues. That warning is a forecast based on recent traffic patterns, not a confirmed decline of that size.

Reddit Reports Revenue Growth Despite Traffic Concerns

Reddit’s traffic difficulties come despite strong financial results for the third quarter of 2026. The company reported revenue of $895 million, an increase of 53% compared with the same period in 2025.

Advertising revenue rose 54% to $847 million, demonstrating continued demand from businesses seeking to reach Reddit’s communities. Net income reached $283 million, while adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization totaled $402 million.

Daily active unique users averaged 130.3 million during the quarter, representing 12% growth from a year earlier. Weekly active unique users increased 16% to 515.2 million, showing that the platform’s overall audience remained larger than it was in 2025.

However, the United States experienced a 2% decline in daily active unique visitors, bringing the domestic figure to 50.7 million. The weaker American audience numbers increased concerns that changes in search traffic could eventually limit Reddit’s growth.

The company also emphasized that signed-in and mobile app users produce more than 80% of its monetization. Huffman believes expanding that audience will make Reddit less dependent on visitors who arrive through external search engines.

Investors nevertheless reacted negatively to the outlook, with Reddit shares falling sharply in extended trading following the earnings announcement. The market response reflected concerns that declining search traffic could become a lasting obstacle despite the company’s revenue growth.

What Will Happen to People Without Reddit Accounts?

Reddit has not decided exactly how much content will remain available to visitors who are not logged in. The company intends to use its initial international tests to determine where restrictions should apply and how users respond.

Huffman acknowledged that some public access would remain useful, particularly for people following shared links or discovering Reddit through search results. The company is considering how to preserve those entry points while encouraging visitors to register or sign into existing accounts.

Reddit also emphasized that creating an account does not require users to publicly identify themselves by their real names. Members can continue using usernames that are separate from their offline identities, although their activity may still be associated with their accounts.

For existing users, the changes could result in more personalized feeds and community recommendations. People who prefer browsing without their activity influencing recommendations may face a different experience depending on how the final system is designed.

The company is rebuilding its mobile app’s incognito browsing feature, which allows signed-in users to explore content without affecting their normal browsing history or personalization. Huffman suggested that a better private browsing option could help retain people who repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the app.

Incognito browsing would not necessarily provide the same access as visiting Reddit without an account. The feature is intended to separate browsing activity from a user’s regular recommendations while operating within the app.

AI Companies and Reddit’s Valuable Data

Reddit’s strategy also reflects growing competition over access to online discussions used by artificial intelligence developers. Its enormous archive of conversations has become a commercial asset because it contains information about human preferences, experiences and opinions.

The company has entered licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI that permit access to Reddit content under negotiated terms. Google’s agreement has previously been reported to be worth approximately $60 million annually, although the precise financial terms are not publicly disclosed in full.

Huffman said Reddit continues discussing its commercial relationship with Google and expects future agreements to provide appropriate value for the platform’s information. The company intends to maintain licensing arrangements that include protections governing how its content may be used.

Reddit has also pursued legal action against companies it accuses of collecting its data without authorization. These disputes reflect broader disagreements over how publicly accessible website content should be used to train and operate AI systems.

At the same time, Reddit’s own business depends partly on people being able to discover its discussions through internet searches. Limiting anonymous access could protect content from unauthorized collection while making it harder for new visitors to discover the platform.

A Major Change for Reddit’s Open-Web History

For many longtime users, Reddit’s appeal has included the ability to read discussions without committing to an account. The platform has served as a destination for community participation and a source of information available through ordinary web searches.

A mandatory login requirement would make Reddit more similar to other large social media services that prioritize registered users. It could also complicate access for people who occasionally visit the site to read a single discussion or find an answer to a specific question.

Huffman acknowledged the significance of restricting access to a platform associated with the open internet. However, he said Reddit’s size, changing technology and business requirements made the transition necessary.

The company is also improving its main feed to present a more consistent combination of subscribed communities and personalized recommendations. Those changes are intended to encourage users to visit Reddit directly rather than relying on search engines to bring them back.

Reddit’s first tests are scheduled for the final months of 2026, with results expected to guide a broader international rollout. The company has not established a final worldwide launch date or announced precisely which public discussions will remain accessible without signing in.
