The seven-time Formula One world champion secured his 105th career pole position on October 31, 2026, beating Mercedes driver George Russell by just 0.009 seconds in a dramatic qualifying session at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Lewis Hamilton secured his first Formula One Grand Prix pole position for Ferrari on Saturday, October 31, 2026, delivering a remarkable qualifying performance at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion beat Mercedes driver George Russell by just 0.009 seconds, ending a pole-position drought that had lasted more than three years.

Hamilton recorded a fastest lap of 1 minute, 16.514 seconds at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Russell finished second with a time of 1:16.523, while Hamilton’s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc qualified third in 1:16.633.

The result marked Hamilton’s record-extending 105th career pole position and his first for Ferrari in a regular Grand Prix qualifying session. At 41, he also became the oldest Formula One pole-sitter since Mario Andretti in 1982.

The achievement came during a challenging period in Hamilton’s career, following his move from Mercedes to Ferrari and several seasons of difficulty with qualifying performance.

Hamilton Delivers Under Pressure in Final Qualifying Session

The battle for pole position remained extremely close throughout the final qualifying session, known as Q3.

Leclerc initially appeared well positioned to claim the fastest time for Ferrari. His opening lap of 1:16.647 placed him ahead of the field, while Hamilton struggled to match his teammate’s performance during the middle section of the circuit.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen also threatened to challenge for pole after producing competitive sector times. However, he lost time in the middle section and could not complete a faster final lap.

Russell then delivered a strong late effort, recording a time of 1:16.523 to briefly move into provisional pole position.

Hamilton responded with the decisive lap of the afternoon.

His final attempt was nine thousandths of a second faster than Russell’s, giving Ferrari its first qualifying position on the grid and denying Mercedes a pole position.

The margin was so narrow that it demonstrated how closely matched the leading cars were around the 4.304-kilometer circuit.

Leclerc improved his time but remained third, 0.119 seconds behind Hamilton.

According to the FIA’s official qualifying report, the final run completed an impressive turnaround for Hamilton, who had initially been more than four-tenths slower than Leclerc during Q3.

The British driver found the additional speed when it mattered most, producing one of his strongest single-lap performances since joining Ferrari.

Difficult Years Make Pole Position More Meaningful

Hamilton’s achievement was particularly significant because his previous Grand Prix pole position came at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, when he was still racing for Mercedes.

He joined Ferrari for the 2025 season after spending 12 years with Mercedes, where he won six of his seven world championships.

His transition to Ferrari attracted enormous attention, but the move did not immediately produce the results he had hoped for.

The British driver struggled with the handling characteristics of his new car and the challenge of extracting maximum performance during qualifying sessions.

Hamilton has frequently discussed the difficulties created by Formula One’s modern tires.

The championship introduced 18-inch wheels in 2022, replacing the previous 13-inch design. The newer tires brought different handling characteristics, requiring drivers to adapt their techniques and work carefully within narrow temperature ranges.

Hamilton explained that finding the correct tire operating window could be exceptionally difficult, particularly when track temperatures and grip levels changed between qualifying runs.

He compared the challenge to searching for a needle in a haystack, reflecting the small adjustments needed to achieve competitive performance.

The Mexico City result suggested that Hamilton had made progress in understanding how to extract maximum grip and performance from the equipment.

However, one successful qualifying session does not establish that every handling difficulty has been resolved.

Mexico City’s High Altitude Creates Unique Challenge

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez presents unusual technical demands because it sits more than 2,200 meters above sea level.

The thinner air reduces aerodynamic downforce and affects engine cooling, forcing teams to make careful decisions about car setup.

Even when cars use high-downforce aerodynamic configurations, they can generate less grip than at circuits closer to sea level.

The conditions make it difficult for drivers to maintain consistent traction through slower corners while also maximizing speed along the circuit’s long straights.

Tire management becomes especially important because the rubber must reach the correct temperature without overheating.

Hamilton’s performance demonstrated how small differences in precision could determine the starting order.

The circuit also features a long run from the starting grid into the opening corner, creating opportunities for drivers behind the leader to benefit from a slipstream.

That means pole position does not guarantee an advantage through the first corner.

Hamilton will need a strong launch and effective positioning to defend his lead against Russell, Leclerc, and the other contenders when the race begins.

Ferrari Places Both Drivers in Top Three

Ferrari emerged from qualifying with both cars among the fastest three, placing the team in a promising position for Sunday’s race.

Leclerc’s third-place finish gives Ferrari a second opportunity to challenge for victory, although the team must manage its drivers’ strategies carefully.

The Monegasque driver had shown strong speed earlier in qualifying and briefly led the final session before Hamilton’s late improvement.

Russell’s second-place result also creates an interesting battle at the front, with Hamilton starting alongside a former Mercedes teammate.

Verstappen qualified fourth but is due to serve a one-place grid penalty, promoting championship leader Kimi Antonelli to fourth.

Antonelli qualified fifth, just 0.193 seconds behind Hamilton.

McLaren driver Lando Norris finished sixth, followed by Isack Hadjar, while other drivers faced difficulties during the session.

Oscar Piastri suffered a disappointing qualifying result, finishing 13th after failing to advance beyond Q2.

Fernando Alonso’s session ended early when his Aston Martin experienced a suspected water-pressure problem associated with its energy recovery system.

The issue interrupted the opening qualifying segment and brought out the red flags.

Liam Lawson initially qualified eighth, but a subsequent technical infringement led to his disqualification from the qualifying results.

The penalties and technical decisions will affect the final starting order, adding another consideration for teams preparing their race strategies.

Championship Stakes Add Pressure to Sunday’s Race

The Mexico City Grand Prix arrives at an important point in the 2026 Formula One championship.

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings and has an opportunity to secure his first world championship during Sunday’s race.

According to Reuters, the Italian needs only a ninth-place finish to clinch the title, regardless of the results of his closest rivals.

Antonelli’s position adds significance to the contest at the front of the field, where Russell and Hamilton will be trying to convert qualifying speed into a victory.

For Ferrari, the immediate objective is different.

Hamilton is seeking his first Grand Prix victory with the team, while Leclerc also hopes to capitalize on the strong qualifying performance.

The team must consider tire degradation, pit-stop timing, traffic, and the possibility of safety-car interruptions during the 71-lap race.

The result of Saturday’s qualifying provides a strong opportunity, but Sunday’s performance will depend on race pace as well as one-lap speed.

Hamilton Looks to Convert Pole Into Ferrari Victory

Hamilton’s latest milestone adds another chapter to one of Formula One’s most successful careers.

With seven world championships and 105 pole positions, he already holds numerous records. His achievement in Mexico City demonstrates that he remains capable of competing at the front of the field.

It also represents an important moment for Ferrari, which recruited Hamilton with the goal of returning to consistent championship contention.

His performance gives the team a chance to secure a major victory and improve its position against Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren.

The Mexico City Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, over 71 laps at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Hamilton will begin from pole position alongside Russell, with Leclerc immediately behind them. After more than three years without a Grand Prix pole, the next challenge is turning that qualifying achievement into his first race victory for Ferrari.
