Warren Buffett is stepping down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway after more than five decades at the helm of the $1 trillion conglomerate. The 96-year-old investor will take on the title of chairman emeritus and assume his new role immediately, the company announced Friday. His son Howard Buffett will become the new chairman as part of a long-term succession plan.

Howard Buffett has been on the Berkshire Hathaway board since 1993 and will now take over the top leadership role, according to kdvr.com. Buffett will remain a director of the company and has held the chairman position since 1970, though he took over the struggling textile firm in 1965, according to a report from the Los Angeles Daily News. Greg Abel became CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the beginning of this year, ending Buffett’s roughly 60-year tenure as chief executive.

Despite stepping down from the chairman role, Buffett will remain involved with the company as a director and chairman emeritus. In a letter to shareholders Friday, Buffett called serving as chairman the privilege of a lifetime and said the timing was right to complete the leadership transition. He expressed confidence in both Abel and his son Howard to lead the company forward.

Buffett said Abel had exceeded the high expectations he had for him since becoming CEO. He also acknowledged his age in explaining the timing of his departure. “Father Time always wins,” Buffett wrote.

Abel will continue to run the company, while Howard Buffett is expected to guard Berkshire’s culture and values. Greg Abel has been managing Berkshire’s non-insurance businesses since 2018 and is familiar with its various holdings. These include BNSF railroad, utility operations, manufacturing companies, and well-known brands such as Dairy Queen and See’s Candy.

Howard Buffett will serve as non-executive chairman and is not expected to manage Berkshire’s daily operations. Warren Buffett described his son’s role as helping protect the culture that has developed during his decades of leadership.

CFRA Research analyst Cathy Seifert has raised concerns about how Abel will manage Berkshire’s massive cash reserves of about $365 billion. CFRA Research analyst Cathy Seifert noted that investors are questioning whether Abel can match Buffett’s track record in capital allocation. Buffett has long been known for his influence on the financial markets, with Berkshire’s stock picks often causing market movements.

Berkshire reported about $365.5 billion in cash and equivalents in its most recent quarterly results. Abel has already started putting some of that money to work. Berkshire invested $10 billion in Google parent Alphabet and bought back about $4.5 billion of its own shares during the most recent quarter, according to the Associated Press.

When Berkshire reveals its stock trades, it can cause significant shifts in market sentiment. Investor Adam Mead said Buffett seems to be trying to lessen the impact on Berkshire when he eventually dies by taking this step now. Michael Withers, a professor at the University of Notre Dame, said Buffett’s approach to succession was deliberate and thoughtful.

He emphasized that Buffett understood the challenge wasn’t just finding a replacement but preserving Berkshire’s unique identity. Buffett’s wealth has largely come from Berkshire Hathaway stock, which he built into an iconic investment empire. The company started as a New England textile business and grew into a major conglomerate through strategic acquisitions.

In 2024, Berkshire Hathaway became one of the first non-tech firms to reach a market value of over $1 trillion. Buffett is also a well-known philanthropist, having donated about $66 billion worth of Berkshire stock since 2006. Most of the donations went to Bill Gates’ foundation, but Buffett recently announced that his children will now manage his charitable giving.

More recent estimates put Buffett’s total charitable giving at about $71 billion. He stopped making new donations to the Gates Foundation this summer and said future giving would go through foundations associated with his family.

Buffett’s financial philosophy has had a powerful impact on the business world. His influence has been so great that Berkshire’s stock movements are closely watched by investors around the globe. Shares of Berkshire Hathaway dipped slightly in early trading Friday after the announcement.

The stock reaction remained relatively small compared with the importance of the leadership change. Reuters reported that Berkshire is now valued at about $1.1 trillion and that Howard Buffett is taking the chairman position while Abel remains responsible for the company’s operations and strategy.

Greg Abel, who became the new CEO at the beginning of the year, said Buffett’s impact on Berkshire and its owners is unmatched in American business history.
