President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the White House on Thursday for a major summit focused on trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and global security. The leaders emphasized cooperation in public, but their talks did not produce a broad agreement resolving the biggest disputes between the United States and China.
Xi’s trip was his first visit to Washington in more than a decade. The White House welcomed him with a formal state visit that included military ceremonies, an Oval Office meeting and a state dinner.
The summit came at a time when the two countries remain closely connected economically while competing for influence in technology, trade and security.
According to Reuters, the United States and China agreed to extend their existing trade truce for another two months. The temporary extension gives negotiators more time to work on disputes involving tariffs, Chinese purchases of American goods, rare-earth materials and technology restrictions.
Those issues have caused repeated friction between Washington and Beijing.
U.S. officials have raised concerns about access to critical minerals from China. Rare-earth materials are important for semiconductors, aircraft, defense equipment and many advanced technologies.
China remains a major supplier of several of these materials.
Agricultural purchases are another issue in the trade talks. Reuters reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said China had met its commitment involving soybean purchases under an earlier agreement but was behind on some other agricultural purchases.
The summit also placed artificial intelligence near the center of the relationship.
Trump has favored relatively limited federal restrictions on AI development. Xi, however, said both countries have a responsibility to manage the technology and keep its development under human control.
That difference reflects a larger debate about how governments should regulate increasingly powerful AI systems.
The United States and China are also competing to build the most advanced computer chips, AI models and data centers. Washington has restricted exports of some advanced semiconductor technology to China, while Beijing has criticized those limits.
American officials have argued that some export restrictions are needed for national security.
China has said restrictions on advanced technology are unfair and interfere with normal economic development.
Taiwan remained one of the most sensitive issues discussed during the meeting.
Chinese state media said Xi asked Trump to handle the Taiwan issue cautiously and repeated Beijing’s opposition to Taiwanese independence. The White House had not released a detailed account of the private conversation by late Thursday.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to take control of the island. Taiwan has its own elected government, military and political system.
The United States does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but U.S. law requires Washington to provide the island with the means to defend itself.
Arms sales have therefore become a recurring source of disagreement between Washington and Beijing.
Trump delayed final approval earlier this year for a proposed arms package for Taiwan worth about $14 billion, according to reporting by Reuters and the Associated Press. China has repeatedly urged the United States to permanently stop such sales.
The war involving Iran was another major topic.
China has maintained important economic ties with Iran and has resisted pressure from Washington to take a stronger role in forcing Tehran to accept U.S. demands.
During Thursday’s meeting, Xi supported renewed talks between the United States and Iran, according to Chinese state media cited by Reuters and the Associated Press.
The conflict has become especially important because of its effect on oil markets and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
China imports large amounts of energy from the Middle East. That gives Beijing a direct economic interest in reducing disruptions to shipping and oil supplies.
Despite the disagreements, both presidents repeatedly talked about avoiding a larger conflict between their countries.
Xi said competition between the United States and China should remain controlled and described the countries’ interests as closely connected. He also called for continued military communication and stronger efforts to prevent misunderstandings from developing into crises.
Trump emphasized his personal relationship with Xi.
During the public welcome, Trump described the relationship between them as a friendship built on mutual respect. He said the United States and China could continue working together despite major differences.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Xi called for continued communication, cooperation and peaceful coexistence between the two countries. He also said the United States and China have a shared responsibility to develop artificial intelligence in ways that benefit people.
The visit included considerable ceremony.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at the White House. The leaders attended a military review, toured areas of the White House grounds and later attended a formal state dinner.
The ceremonial events were more visible than the private negotiations.
Reuters reported that no major breakthrough was announced after the meeting. The trade truce was extended, and both sides agreed to continue discussions, but disputes over Taiwan, technology, trade and security remain unresolved.
The two governments did find some areas where communication could continue.
Chinese state media reported that Trump and Xi agreed to support each other as their countries host major international meetings, including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering and the Group of 20 summit. The leaders also discussed Ukraine, the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula.
The Washington meeting showed that the two governments are trying to prevent their competition from becoming an open confrontation.
At the same time, neither government indicated that it was prepared to abandon its main positions.
China continues to press Washington over Taiwan and technology restrictions. The United States continues to seek changes in Chinese trade practices, greater access to critical materials and cooperation on international security problems.
The summit therefore produced more continued communication than major policy change.
For businesses and governments around the world, the relationship remains important because the United States and China are the world’s two largest economies.
Decisions made by Washington and Beijing can affect global trade, computer technology, energy markets and military security.
Thursday’s summit kept negotiations moving.
It also showed how many difficult issues remain between the two countries.
