Battle to Save Rare Glutinous Snail in One UK Lake

Zoos Join Effort to Save UK’s Last Wild Glutinous Snails

Ian Hughes is working to protect the last known UK home of the glutinous snail. In the UK, the snail lives only in Llyn Tegid, a lake located in Wales. The species still survives elsewhere in Europe, so Llyn Tegid is its last known UK refuge rather than its only home worldwide. Several British zoos are now setting up ark populations using snails bred by Hughes and his family in Ceredigion. BIAZA says Askham Bryan, Dudley Zoo, Longleat, Wingham Wildlife Park and Chester Zoo are among the facilities breeding the species.

Hughes, one of the researchers involved, expressed deep concern about how long the snails might survive, according to the BBC. He said he was unsure whether they would last an hour or even a full day.

Nobody had knowingly seen the snail’s eggs before Hughes’ captive-breeding breakthrough in 2015. This breakthrough has opened new possibilities for protecting the species. Freshwater Habitats Trust reported in April 2015 that the captive snails had laid eggs after the breeding project began the previous year.

Hughes described the snail as a rare treasure. He compared its value to that of an Egyptian artifact.

He added that saving the snail is a responsibility to future generations. Preserving it is not just about science, but also about duty.

The research team has been closely monitoring the lake and its ecosystem. They are trying to understand how best to support the snail’s survival. Its presence in Llyn Tegid makes the lake an important site for biodiversity.

Scientists are now focused on how to keep the snail’s habitat safe. The lake is under special protection due to its unique wildlife. Llyn Tegid is Wales’s largest natural lake and is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Ramsar wetland and part of a Special Area of Conservation.

Environmental conditions in the lake are being carefully studied. Any changes in water levels or temperature could affect the snail’s survival. Natural Resources Wales research found the snails live in shallow areas near the shore, which makes them vulnerable to sudden or extreme changes in lake level.

The research team is working with local authorities to maintain the lake’s health. They are also educating people about the importance of protecting rare species.

The snail’s eggs were found in a tank after four months. This discovery has given researchers hope for the future of the species. Hughes now has about 2,000 glutinous snails in homemade tanks at his home, according to the BBC.

In July, BIAZA said its conservation project had received just over £50,000 from the UK government’s Species Recovery Programme. The wider program has £60 million in government funding over three years. The goal is to build healthy captive populations and eventually return the species to suitable locations in England.

The team continues to observe how the snail behaves in its natural setting. They want to learn everything they can about its life cycle and needs.

The snail’s survival is now a top priority for conservationists. Efforts are underway to ensure it does not disappear from the UK forever. BIAZA conservation leader Nicky Needham told the BBC she hoped reintroduction could be possible within three years if research and breeding go well.

Hughes and his team are determined to do everything they can. They believe the snail’s future depends on continued care and attention.

The work is delicate and requires constant vigilance. Scientists are hopeful that with the right support, the snail can be saved.
