US National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion Amid Rising Interest Costs

The United States government reported that its gross national debt has surpassed $40 trillion, according to data released by the Treasury Department. This milestone comes just five months after the nation reached a record high of $39 trillion in debt, showing a rapid increase in borrowing.

The federal government continues to operate with a deficit, meaning it spends more than it collects in revenue each year, according to the Jamaica Observer. Experts have long warned that the US is on an unsustainable fiscal path, especially as deficits rise and interest payments grow.

The debt has risen sharply in recent years due to a combination of factors including aging populations, increased spending on social programs, and higher borrowing costs, according to a report from CNN. Social Security and Medicare are major contributors to the growing financial burden, as more people retire and live longer.

Tax cuts, spending increases, and pandemic-related relief packages have also added to the national debt over time. The government’s spending has consistently outpaced its income, leading to a growing deficit that requires more borrowing.

Interest payments on the debt have surged in recent years as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to fight inflation. This year, interest costs are projected to exceed $1 trillion, a record level that the source does not specify as being nearly equal to Medicare spending.

The rising cost of servicing the debt makes it harder for the government to fund other programs and priorities. Michael Peterson says that without changes to current fiscal policies, the debt could reach $50 trillion within six years.

The Treasury Department has taken steps to stabilize bond markets, but rising yields on long-term bonds reflect investor concerns about the debt situation. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to its highest point since 2007, indicating that investors are demanding higher returns for lending money to the US.

Higher bond yields affect borrowing costs across the economy, including mortgages, auto loans, and business investments. The US debt ceiling is set to be reviewed again in 2027, after Congress raised it by $5 trillion last year.

Experts warn that the current fiscal trajectory threatens long-term economic stability and could lead to a full-blown crisis if not addressed, lemonde.fr reported. The federal government’s financial situation is now considered the worst among developed countries according to recent data from the OECD.

The growing national debt has already begun to impact Americans’ daily lives through higher borrowing costs and reduced investment in public services. Despite these warnings, lawmakers have shown little willingness to make changes to the nation’s fiscal policies.

The government’s increasing reliance on borrowing has also led to credit rating downgrades, further raising concerns about long-term financial health.
