President Donald Trump made a secret trip to Turkey during the NATO summit in July 2026, where he reportedly swapped planes mid-flight. He arrived at Ankara International Airport on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, to depart from the summit.
Trump said he was flying on a different aircraft than the one that had been gifted to him by Qatar, which he had originally traveled to Turkey on, according to AOL. He told reporters that the plane he flew on was actually at greater risk, and that he went by the Secret Service and military guidance, according to a report from The Independent. The president also said that if he goes, others go with him, showing a sense of shared responsibility for safety.
His decision to travel in a smaller government aircraft from Turkey to the United Kingdom was part of a larger plan that involved moving between planes. After arriving in the UK, Trump reportedly snuck back onto a decoy jet, descended from it, and then boarded a Qatari plane.
This type of covert travel is not new for presidents, but the secrecy surrounding Trump’s trip was unusual. Presidents have taken secret overseas trips in the past for security reasons, often keeping details classified until after the fact.
Security experts noted that such actions are not uncommon, especially in a modern world where threats are frequent. Garrett M. Graff, a security expert, said the presence of the press corps is about protecting both democracy and the presidency.
In previous trips, presidents have gone to war zones to show leadership, often with limited public announcement until after they are safe. In Trump’s first term, he made a secret trip to Afghanistan on Thanksgiving Day in 2019, using a decoy plane and press pool to maintain the illusion that he was at Mar-a-Lago. That trip involved him spending time with troops and meeting with Afghanistan’s then-president Ashraf Ghani.
The Secret Service and military often go to great lengths to keep presidents safe during such trips. In a similar case, President Joe Biden took a secret trip to Poland and then traveled overnight by train to Kyiv in Ukraine. Biden’s trip was not expected to be public, but two journalists went with him and documented his visit to Kyiv.
The press pool at the White House had been expecting a quiet Sunday in Washington, but Biden’s trip was unexpected. Some internet sleuths believe Trump chose favorites when he snuck off Air Force One in Turkey last month.
They suggest that Trump picked certain aides and media members to accompany him, leaving cabinet officials behind. Among those who reportedly went with Trump were his aides Natalie Harp and Walt Nauta. Top cabinet members like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not board the flight.
Natalie Harp, nicknamed Trump’s ‘human printer,’ has been seen around the president consistently. Her official duties include printing emails and articles for Trump, as well as handling social media tasks on Truth Social. In the book ‘Regime Change,’ she is described as one of the more influential figures in Trump’s administration. The book also claims Harp left personal letters for Trump to find in his private spaces.
Trump said he was leaving the NATO summit on what he called the legacy Air Force One and not the Qatar-gifted jet. According to reports, after boarding, Trump was transferred to a catering truck before leaving the plane.
It remains unclear how he returned to the aircraft.
The situation raised questions about security and decision-making during high-risk travel.
