British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, a well-known supporter of President Donald Trump, has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The 41-year-old former editor at Breitbart News and a former employee of rapper Kanye West appears to be held in an immigration facility based on records from ICE’s inmate registry. His presence in custody was confirmed through a search of the database, though details about his arrest or legal status remain sparse.
Critics have often dismissed him as someone who spreads hate speech rather than engaging in provocative debate for entertainment, according to usaherald.com. Neither ICE nor Yiannopoulos has responded to requests for comment on the matter. A nationwide search of detainee records did yield an entry matching his name and British nationality, lending credibility to reports of his detention.
Yiannopoulos was raised in Kent, England, before moving to the United States where he became a prominent figure in right-wing media. The exact circumstances leading to his arrest have not been made public, and key information about timing or cause remains unreported.
He was among the earliest and most visible supporters of Trump during the 2016 campaign, including speaking at a Republican National Convention event titled ‘Gays for Trump’. Yiannopoulos has often supported aggressive immigration enforcement policies, even writing that ICE agents should have total legal immunity when on duty. He is known for using provocative headlines and stances that helped build his public profile.
His career took a major hit in 2017 after recordings surfaced in which he made comments about sexual relationships between adults and minors, according to a report from The Times of India. That incident led to him losing a Conservative Political Action Conference appearance, a book deal with Simon & Schuster, and his position at Breitbart, Yahoo News reported.
He later worked for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and became political operations director for rapper Ye’s failed 2024 presidential campaign. Yiannopoulos was arrested at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport while rapper Ye was performing in the city.
The reason for his detention and his immigration status remain unclear to the public. Laura Loomer, a conservative commentator, claimed she reported Yiannopoulos to ICE after he allegedly made threats against her. She also said that Yiannopoulos had incited violence against President Trump and worked with Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Loomer added that Yiannopoulos was living in the US illegally and would be deported to the UK. DHS confirmed that Yiannopoulos was arrested on August 27 at the airport in Kenner, Louisiana. He had legally entered the United States on May 14, 2019, through New York City. An immigration judge issued a final order of removal against him on July 22 after he failed to appear at his hearing.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that being in detention is a choice and encouraged illegal aliens to self-deport using the CBP Home App. The agency also offered $3,000 and a free flight to those who choose to leave the country voluntarily.
It warned that those who do not comply will be arrested and deported without the chance to return. Yiannopoulos has been associated with the alt-right movement, though he denies being a member of it.
He once described the alt-right as ‘energising and exciting,’ a statement that has drawn criticism from observers. Born in England, Yiannopoulos became known for his role at Breitbart News and other right-wing outlets.
His arrest comes amid ongoing scrutiny over his immigration status and political associations.
