Dwayne Johnson is preparing for another major role transformation, this time working with director Benny Safdie on a new film called Lizard Music. Johnson spoke about the project at D23, revealing that production has already begun and that he’s spending five hours each day in makeup to portray a man in his 70s. He described the character as someone who is much older than himself, noting that he had to look up what the term meant and learned it refers to people in their 70s. Johnson also mentioned that he’s working with Kazu Hiro, a Hollywood legend who helped with prosthetics on The Smashing Machine and is helping with Lizard Music. He said the experience has been challenging but rewarding, calling it a personal goal he pursued with excitement and determination. The actor emphasized his close relationship with Safdie, saying the director is one of his best friends and most trusted collaborators.
Safdie described the story as centered around a young boy who discovers an island inhabited by talking lizards that broadcast television and play music, according to Deadline. Johnson had previously mentioned slimming down for this role, following his appearance in The Smashing Machine last year. The film was picked up by Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists earlier this year after the success of their previous collaboration. Lizard Music is written and directed by Safdie, who has worked with Johnson before on a project that was released by A24.
Johnson’s involvement in the film marks another step in his continued exploration of diverse and challenging roles. The project is being filmed with a strong focus on visual effects and character design, especially for the portrayal of the sentient lizards. Johnson’s commitment to the role includes not just physical transformation but also emotional investment in the story. He expressed enthusiasm for the creative process and said he is eager to share the finished film with audiences.
The movie is expected to be a unique blend of fantasy and drama, with Safdie’s signature style combined with Johnson’s star power. This collaboration comes after their work on The Smashing Machine, which showcased both actors’ abilities to take on intense roles. The film’s production is currently in its second week, with Johnson and Safdie continuing to build the world of Lizard Music.
Johnson’s participation in the project also reflects his ongoing interest in pushing creative boundaries and exploring new genres. The story of Lizard Music is set to explore themes of discovery, imagination, and connection with nature through its unique cast of characters. With his history of taking on complex roles, Johnson’s portrayal of an older character adds another layer to his evolving filmography.
