At least 90 Americans are among more than 2,000 people missing after devastating floods struck the Nepal-China border region. The disaster has killed over 500 people, according to local authorities, and rescue teams are working in areas that were temporarily closed due to fears of a secondary flood from a newly formed barrier lake. Survivors described the flooding as sudden and overwhelming, with water moving like a tsunami, forcing people to flee to higher ground for safety. CNN teams have documented the scale of destruction in the area, showing neighborhoods completely swept away by mud and debris. The situation has prompted many communities around the world to respond with support, including fundraising efforts and candlelight vigils. In Atlanta, the Nepali community is organizing events such as concerts and a vigil to raise funds for flood relief efforts in Nepal. The New Zealand Nepal Society canceled its planned gathering and instead held a candlelight vigil to honor the victims of the disaster.

In the affected areas of Nepal, entire villages have been swept away, leaving behind thick mud and sediment where homes once stood, according to ABC News. Many survivors are being taken to military training centers that have been converted into relief camps, where they receive shelter and medical care. Children who were separated from their families are also being cared for at these shelters as officials work to reunite them with relatives. Some of those who survived the floods shared stories of how they narrowly escaped, including one man who said he only felt safe after reaching a higher point.

In the United States, families are holding out hope for their missing loved ones, even as search teams continue to work in dangerous conditions, according to a report from CNN. Mukti Patel from Richmond, Virginia, is among those still waiting for news about her father, sister, and other relatives who were traveling in a tour group when the floods struck, the New York Daily News reported. The tour group was organized by Himalayan Glacier Adventure and Travel Company, which had brought 40 guests and seven guides on a two-week trip to the region. Patel’s family members are Canadian citizens, while her father and sister are from India, according to her. She said her father had long wanted to visit Nepal and that the trip was meant to be a celebration of her sister’s birthday. The last contact with the group came just before the flood hit, and no word has come since then.

Patel said she hopes more countries will step in to help with rescue and recovery efforts in the region. The Nepali diaspora is also adjusting their traditions in response to the tragedy, such as the Teej festival, which usually celebrates women’s well-being but now focuses on supporting flood victims.

Families of missing Americans and others are continuing to seek information as rescue teams work through the debris. The search for survivors continues in areas where landslides and flooding have created new dangers. Rescue teams are also working to locate missing foreign nationals, including dozens of Americans who were part of the tour group that went missing.

The situation remains fluid as monsoon rains continue to pose risks across the region.
