Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a strong appeal for global assistance during a live video address to the United Nations Security Council. He accused Russian forces of committing war crimes, describing how soldiers targeted and killed civilians in the country. Zelenskyy said Russian troops shot women as they tried to call for help, and that some victims were killed in brutal ways. He demanded that those responsible be brought to a war crimes tribunal for accountability.

The Russian ambassador to the UN rejected these claims, calling the video evidence a fabricated setup by Ukraine. He said that only Western countries would believe such footage and that it was meant to mislead the public.

Ukraine reported finding hundreds of bodies in areas around Kyiv, especially in the town of Bucha. The Prosecutor General of Ukraine said that 410 bodies were discovered, and that many witnesses were too traumatized to speak.

Zelenskyy also said that Russia was trying to eliminate the Ukrainian people as a whole nation. When asked if this constituted genocide, he confirmed that it did.

Images released by Ukraine showed civilians shot in the back of the head with hands tied behind their backs. Russia claimed that no local residents had been harmed while its troops were in Bucha.

Satellite images showed bodies remaining in the same positions for weeks, suggesting they had been left unattended. A mass grave was found at a church in Bucha that may contain more than 150 people.

Russia’s information official denied the authenticity of the footage and blamed Western nations for orchestrating the accusations. International leaders responded with strong statements and new sanctions against Russia.

The United Kingdom said it was leading efforts to impose harsher economic penalties on Russia. The United States announced that it would increase existing sanctions and introduce additional ones.

These actions were coordinated with European allies and other global partners.

Zelenskyy also addressed the issue of Belarus’s role in the war, calling on its leader to remove military equipment used by Russia. He said that signal relay stations were located in Belarus and were helping Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

Ukraine has been increasing its defenses along the northern border due to signs of more involvement from Belarus. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko issued an apology and said his country did not want to be part of the war.

Zelenskyy responded by saying that Lukashenko should remove the equipment instead of just making statements. He also pointed out that Belarus was a major supplier of oil to Russia, and said it had the power to stop this support.

Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil assets to weaken its military efforts. European Union leaders discussed diplomatic options with Russia, though some were skeptical of the approach.

EU chief António Costa said that dialogue was necessary, even if Russia had not shown clear willingness to engage. Russia said it was open to talks but would not accept ultimatums from European nations.

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that the EU would be present in any future peace negotiations, but not as a mediator. Poland’s president threatened to withdraw a top honor from Zelenskyy after he renamed an army unit.

This move could create a diplomatic crisis ahead of a major reconstruction conference in Poland. Ukraine’s foreign minister said the decision was harmful to Ukraine and benefited Russia.

Russian shelling killed three people in Kramatorsk, a city near the eastern front. France arrested a Belarus-born man suspected of spying for Russia on a drone company.

The man was reportedly filming a drone prototype used by both French and Ukrainian forces.

Iran condemned an attack on one of its ships in the Caspian Sea, saying it killed one sailor and injured another. Iran said it would defend its national interests in response to the incident.

Ukraine summoned Iran’s diplomatic representative after the attack. Zelenskyy said that Russia was sharing satellite data with Iran to help direct attacks in the region.

He claimed Ukraine had conducted long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including against ships used by Iran. Zelenskyy also said that Russia was planning to bring in 30,000 North Korean troops.

He added that preparations were already underway in Russia’s Voronezh region to receive these soldiers. North Korea had previously sent troops to help Russia in the Kursk region during a Ukrainian offensive.

A drone attack on a holiday camp in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region killed twelve people, including children. Ukraine did not respond to the accusations made by local authorities.

Russian forces launched missile attacks on Kyiv early Sunday, causing fires in several districts. The air alert was lifted after about an hour, and no casualties were reported.

Kazakhstan’s president suggested that a peace agreement could be possible if both sides paused the conflict. He made this comment during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a Russia-Kazakhstan forum in the Siberian city of Omsk.

Putin outlined details of Russia’s military progress in Ukraine during their discussion.
