Argentina and Spain will meet Sunday for the 2026 World Cup title in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The final brings together the defending champion and the strongest defensive team in the tournament. It also places Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal together in soccer’s biggest match.

The game starts at 3 p.m. Eastern time at New York New Jersey Stadium. Argentina enters with seven wins from seven matches. Spain has six wins and one draw, and it has not lost since March 2024.

According to the Associated Press, Argentina has scored a tournament-high 19 goals. Spain has allowed only one goal in seven matches. Those numbers define the central contest.

Argentina must break the best defense at the World Cup, while Spain must control the tournament’s most productive attack.

Argentina reached the final with a late 2-1 win over England in Atlanta. England led after Anthony Gordon scored in the second half. Enzo Fernandez tied the match in the 85th minute, and Lautaro Martinez headed in the winner during stoppage time.

Reuters reported that Messi helped create both late goals. He found Fernandez before the equalizer and delivered the cross for Martinez. The comeback continued Argentina’s knockout pattern.

Argentina has not advanced with easy wins alone. It beat Cape Verde 3-2 and Egypt 3-2 before defeating Switzerland 3-1. The team has allowed seven goals, but it has answered pressure each time.

Spain took a different route. It defeated France 2-0 in the semifinal and kept France without a shot on target until after the 80th minute. Spain controlled space, possession, and tempo.

The Spanish defense has been steady since the group stage. Spain drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, then beat Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. It later defeated Austria, Portugal, Belgium, and France in the knockout rounds.

Spain has not trailed for a single second at this World Cup. Argentina has trailed for more than 100 minutes, including stoppage time. That difference may shape the opening stages.

Spain will likely seek long periods with the ball. Rodri, Pedri, and Spain’s other midfielders can move opponents across the field. They also protect the defense by limiting attacks.

Former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui told Reuters that pressing Spain looks easier on a tactics board than it does during a match. Spain’s defenders and goalkeeper stay calm under pressure. One pass can remove several opponents very quickly.

Argentina still has reasons to press. Its midfield can win second balls and move forward quickly. Its runners can attack spaces behind Spain’s fullbacks when possession changes.

Messi remains the main concern for Spain. He is 39, but he has played every minute of Argentina’s knockout matches. Two of those matches went to extra time, yet he still produced the key service against England.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said his team will watch Messi closely. He ruled out treating the match as a simple man-marking job. Spain knows Argentina can also threaten through Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and other players.

Yamal is Spain’s most watched attacker. The teenage winger missed one training session after taking a painful knock against France. De la Fuente later said Yamal was in perfect physical condition and had returned to normal training.

The final will also revive an unusual photograph from 2007, when Messi posed with Yamal as a baby during a UNICEF project.

The image now connects two players from different stages of their careers. Messi spent most of his club career at Barcelona and became the club’s greatest star. Yamal later emerged from the same club system as a left-footed attacking talent.

The match carries larger stakes for both countries. Argentina is trying to win its fourth World Cup. A victory would also make it the first men’s team to win consecutive titles since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Spain is seeking its second World Cup after winning in 2010. It also entered this tournament as the reigning European champion. Another title would confirm a long period of success under De la Fuente.

The coaches know each other well. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni studied under De la Fuente during his coaching education in Spain. Their teams also share some ideas about possession, technical skill, and collective work.

The venue adds another part to Messi’s story. He retired from international soccer there after Argentina lost the 2016 Copa America final to Chile. The retirement lasted only a few weeks, and his international career later changed completely.

Messi helped Argentina win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024. He then led the country to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar. Sunday gives him a chance to add another trophy at the site of one of his lowest moments.

Spain’s players say Argentina is more than Messi. Rodri has described the defending champion as a complete team with top players. Spain must stop service to Messi without leaving space for the players around him.

Argentina faces a similar problem with Spain. Yamal draws attention on the wing, but Spain’s danger comes from many positions. Fullbacks, midfielders, substitutes, and central attackers have all contributed during the tournament.

The first goal could change the tactical plan. Spain has looked comfortable while playing from ahead or level. Argentina has shown that it can recover after falling behind, but another comeback against Spain would be its hardest task.

The final may be decided by patience. Argentina cannot chase the ball without a clear plan. Spain cannot assume that possession alone will stop Messi from creating one decisive moment.

Both teams arrive with strong records and clear confidence. Argentina has the experience of winning the last World Cup. Spain has the form, defense, and unbeaten run of a team that expects to control every match.

One side will leave New Jersey with the trophy, while the other will leave after its first defeat of the tournament. The final offers a direct test between Argentina’s scoring and Spain’s control. It also gives Messi and Yamal a shared stage that few players ever reach.
