By Greg Cook on January 12, 2012

Digital News Report – Santa Cruz Sister Cities Committee announced that they have raised over $17,000 for their sister city, Shingu, Japan, that was devastated by Typhoon Talas in September of last year. The donations came from businesses and individuals.

The two cities have been working together for over 38 years. Shingu had helped come to the aid of Santa Cruz in 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake occurred. Shingu donated cherry trees and tsuboniwa, which is a miniature Japanese garden. They also helped to install the sister cities’ compass located near the downtown Santa Cruz Post Office.

Roxi Goin, chair of the Sister Cities sub-committee for Shingu said that there are several relief projects in the Japanese city that is needed and they are still seeking donations.’
