California Budget Fight

By Jim Peterson on April 20, 2011

Digital News Report – California lawmakers are considering several budget cut actions in case the Governor fails to get tax extensions or a tax hike.

Vice Chair of the Senate Budget Committee believes the Governor is using “scare tactics” to convince voters that tax increases are necessary. “I’m disappointed to see Democrats resort to scaring the public by threatening to close schools, and reduce public safety in an attempt to wrestle support for $50 billion worth of unpopular tax increases and extensions”, State Senator Bob Huff tells Digital News Report.

Huff said that the Governor’s cuts went too far, even for Senate Democrats. Several of his spending cuts have already been rejected. “Democrats and their public employee unions have said no to compromise”.

The Republican from 29th district said Democrats want to raid special accounts and use other one-time gimmicks to close the budget gap.

“Our door remains open”, Huff said. “We call on the Governor and the Majority Party to join us in negotiations to craft a true compromise agreement – and not resort to scare tactics that put children and our public safety at risk.”
