State Senate to Consider Cutting Sales Tax for Equipment

By Jim Peterson on April 19, 2011

Digital News Report – A bill being considered in California would eliminate sales taxes on equipment for manufacturing and research and development uses.

According to State Senator Tony Strickland, the senate bill (SB395) would bring jobs back to California. He tells Digital News Report that California is one of only three states that applies a sales tax to manufacturing equipment.

“We’ve lost almost 450,000 jobs because we don’t exempt sales tax on manufacturing equipment,” Strickland said. He said the changes need to be made because small businesses drive our economy.
