Tsunami Hits West Coast of United States

Digital News Report – The tidal surge from the tsunami has hit the west coast of the United States. The damage so far appears to be minimal in Santa Cruz.

As surfers took to the waves, a tidal surge entered the harbor sinking one boat and damaging the dock.

The damage was worse in Crescent City. Because of the ocean topography and the inlet location, the harbor is susceptible to tsunamis. One councilmember said the docks are “pretty much completely” destroyed. One death has been reported.

“More waves generally follow the first for a number of hours,” (Santa Cruz) city officials tell Digital News Report. The first wave is not always the largest.
