Christina Aguilera sings wrong lyrics of the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV

By Victoria Brown on February 6, 2011

Digital News Report – Singer, Christina Aguilera opened the NFL Super Bowl XLV by singing the National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner,” but had mixed up some of her lyrics during her performance.

Aguilera’s performance seemed to hit a wide range of vocal notes, but even though she may have sang the wrong words she kept on going without any pauses.

Here is the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner:

O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Aguilera sang “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming?” again for the fourth line when she should have sang “O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?” The line was a mixture of the second line with some of the words of the fourth line.

Singing the National Anthem for the Super Bowl was probably a very stressful and this may have been why she may have missed the words.
