State May Reimburse Counties For Special Elections

Digital News Report – Special elections are costly and some lawmakers are calling for the state to reimburse the counties.

The recent governor’s budget proposal calls for a special election to extend taxes passed in 2009. The cost of this special election could reach $70 million.

A law was enacted in 1993 that did require the state to pay for special elections that were called by for by the governor. But in 2008 the law was repealed. The state continued to cover the costs in 2009, but there are new fiscal concerns now.

State Senator Sam Blakeslee is calling on the state to cover the costs of special elections from January 2009 through April 19, 2011.
