Bike Ridership in San Francisco Higher

By Jim Peterson on December 15, 2010

Digital News Report – The number of bike riders in San Francisco has increased 58 percent since 2006 according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).

Mayor Gavin Newsom said that the riding lifestyle helps promote a healthy lifestyle. “With the safer and more inviting bike network we’re creating throughout the City, more and more San Franciscans will start bicycling,” the mayor said.

The city has been working on safety issues. The SFMTA Executive Director/CEO, Nathaniel P. Ford Sr, said the agency is working on “improving” bicycling citywide. “As more and more residents choose to incorporate bicycling into their lives, we will continue to build an innovative and comprehensive bike network.”

The city reports significant progress in their plan. On December 17th and 18th they will begin their new bike share program.
