Digital News Report – In celebration of The International Coastal Cleanup Day, Santa Cruz and Watsonville will be cleaning the marine environment on Saturday September 25th.

The effort will be completely voluntary, according to a press release. “In 2009, more than 80,600 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,300,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways.”

California leads the way in this annual cleanup effort. There will be 45 sties in Santa Cruz alone.

Besides picking up the trash, volunteers will find the sources of trash, raise awareness of litter in our environment and try to change the behaviors that cause pollution.
