Independence Day Reflections

By Jim Peterson on July 3, 2010

Digital News Report – When the Declaration of Independence was signed more than 230 years ago, our newly formed country was in the middle of a crisis threatening its very existence. Fortunately our founding fathers had the courage and determination to pursue the future that we are privileged to enjoy today – a future that has blessed this country with unmatched freedoms.

Anyone who looks at the history of America must come away with an admiration for the countless numbers of individuals and groups that worked tirelessly, and in many cases gave their lives, to preserve those freedoms.

As Americans celebrate this July 4th, I want to encourage everyone to take a few moments to remember the courage, values and spirit that make our country the greatest in the world.

It is truly a blessing to live in this country and to be able to enjoy the freedoms that we have.

It is an honor to serve as an elected representative, and I have a great respect for the public trust I have been granted. I am humbled when I consider the long tradition of public service that has been set as an example throughout our history. We should all be proud of so many individuals who have put service to others first in their lives, making this a caring and compassionate nation.

I would like to wish everyone whom I represent in the 31st Senate District a safe and happy July 4th. I’m proud to represent you in the California State Senate and proud to call myself an American.

Happy Birthday and God Bless America!
