First Lady Michelle Obama plants a Larger Garden by the White House

By Victoria Brown on April 1, 2010

Digital News Report – The White House garden is growing bigger this year because First Lady Michelle Obama is on a mission to get kids to eat their vegetables. On Wednesday, Obama had 3rd – 6th grade elementary school students from Washington D.C. And Alexandria, Virginia come by and help plant the White House garden.

Last year the White House garden produced 1,000 pounds of food that help feed people at the White House, but also fed many at homeless shelters too. This year the garden is measuring around 1,500 square feet, which is 400 square feet larger than the year before. The new vegetables being grown this year include bok choy, cauliflower, artichokes, and mustard greens.

Obama had the children gather around and dance and chant to encourage the seeds to grow. Next step having the kids eat some of the vegetables that were grown in the garden.
