2009 Best In Show Winner

Digital News Report – The Westminster Kennel Club is holding their 134th Annual Dog Show Monday and Tuesday with nearly 2500 dogs of 150 breeds (see video below). Held every year since 1877, the show is the second longest running “consecutive” competition in the U.S. after the Kentucky Derby.

Set in Madison Square Gardens in New York City, the competition includes terriers, sporting dogs like spaniels, working dogs like boxers, hound dogs and more. The pure-bred animals are divided into bitches and dogs. All animals need to be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Terriers have won 44 out of 100 recent Best in Show Awards. Other awards include trophies for the Sporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group and Herding Group.

Today the club announced some winners. On Tuesday the club will announce the best in show winner.

The show was originally set up for gun dogs, but has since included all sorts of breeds. Only two herding dogs have ever won best in show. Here is the list of winners since 1907:
