Baby Cribs that were sold at K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart nationwide are being recalled due to strangulation and suffocation hazards. There has been one infant death and 10 injuries reported to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission which has prompted a recall with the cooperation of the manufacturer, Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados. They were sold from January 2005 through December 2009 ranging in price from $120 and $700.
There are approximately 635,000 cribs that are included in this recall.
The problem with the crib is that the hardware on the drop side of the crib can fail causing it to fall off from the crib. This malfunction creates a gap where the young child can become trapped which could lead to suffocation or strangulation. In addition if a slat in the crib is damaged, this too can cause similar scenarios.
Altogether there was 31 reports of the drop side malfunctions and there was six of these reported cased that the infant was trapped between the drop side and the crib mattress. The one child that died from the from entrapment in the drop side of the crib was 6 months old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There was 36 reports of slats being broken, with 7 reports of children being bruises and scratched, with 2 incidents of entrapment but no injuries.
