Flávio Bolsonaro Arrives in Miami After Brazil Election Defeat

Brazil’s defeated presidential candidate has refused to recognize Lula’s reelection and left the country despite a Supreme Court passport order. An unusual two-hour voting extension has become central to his challenge, although election observers have recognized the official results.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated candidate in Brazil’s presidential election, arrived in Miami with his family on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after leaving Brazil despite a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports. The 45-year-old senator has refused to accept his loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and has accused Brazilian authorities of interfering in the election.

Bolsonaro traveled through Argentina and Ecuador before arriving at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday morning. His departure came three days after Lula won the presidential runoff with 51.79% of valid votes, compared with Bolsonaro’s 48.21%.

The result gave Lula a fourth presidential term and marked another defeat for the Bolsonaro family, whose political influence has shaped Brazilian elections for nearly a decade. Flávio’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, lost to Lula in 2022 and was subsequently convicted for his role in a failed attempt to overturn that election.

The younger Bolsonaro now faces legal questions over his departure, ongoing financial investigations and his refusal to recognize the election results. His arrival in Florida also adds another source of tension to relations between Brazil and the United States.

Bolsonaro Travels Through Argentina and Ecuador

Bolsonaro left Brazil on Tuesday with his wife, Fernanda Antunes Figueira Bolsonaro, and their two daughters. The family crossed into Argentina through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, which connects Brazil with Argentina’s Misiones province.

Argentine immigration authorities confirmed that the family entered the country at approximately 10:50 p.m. local time. They said the travelers possessed valid documents and faced no legal restrictions preventing their entry into Argentina.

The family subsequently boarded a private aircraft operated by Baires Fly, an Argentine aviation company. Flight records showed the plane departing Argentina for Guayaquil, Ecuador, before continuing to South Florida.

The aircraft landed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport at approximately 9:30 a.m. Eastern time on October 28. Bolsonaro’s arrival followed confirmation that the Trump administration had approved visas allowing him and his family to enter the United States.

A Brazilian diplomat told The Associated Press that Bolsonaro used an Italian passport to enter Argentina. The diplomat said Brazilian authorities did not record his departure through their usual checkpoints because travelers crossing that border are not required to complete a separate exit procedure.

The circumstances have raised questions about whether Bolsonaro deliberately avoided restrictions imposed by Brazil’s Supreme Court. However, Brazilian authorities had not issued an arrest warrant against him when he left the country.

Supreme Court Ordered Bolsonaro to Surrender Passports

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic Brazilian passports following the presidential election. The order was issued amid ongoing investigations involving allegations of corruption, money laundering and financial misconduct.

Bolsonaro was instructed to hand over the documents to federal police by noon on Tuesday, October 27. He instead left Brazil later that day, apparently using his Italian citizenship to travel internationally.

Investigators are examining allegations that Bolsonaro received substantial financial support from a banker involved in a separate criminal scandal. One inquiry concerns more than $12 million reportedly connected to financing a film about his father, Jair Bolsonaro.

A separate investigation involves allegations that a sports betting business was used to launder money obtained through fraudulent deductions from pension payments. The accusations remain under investigation, and Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing.

The senator has described the investigations as politically motivated and says authorities are targeting him because of his opposition to Lula. Those allegations have not been established in court, and the existence of an investigation does not establish criminal guilt.

Bolsonaro’s eight-year Senate term is scheduled to end on January 31, 2027. His departure therefore comes as he approaches the end of the parliamentary position he has held since 2019.

Controversial Two-Hour Voting Extension

The presidential runoff on October 25 was disrupted by an unusual decision to extend voting hours shortly before polls were scheduled to close. Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered an additional two hours of voting after both presidential campaigns reported problems affecting voters.

The decision came just three minutes before the original 5 p.m. closing time. Some polling stations had already shut down when officials received the order, creating confusion about whether voting should resume.

Lula’s campaign requested additional voting time because of transportation problems in several states, including areas where the president enjoyed strong support. Reports indicated that buses had been prevented from operating in Salvador, potentially interfering with voters trying to reach polling locations.

Bolsonaro’s campaign also sought an extension because heavy rainfall affected southern Brazil, where he had substantial electoral support. Both campaigns therefore requested additional voting time, although they later disagreed about how the decision was implemented.

The extension allowed voting to continue until 7 p.m. Brasília time at locations where polling remained underway. Zanin subsequently clarified that the decision applied to polling stations that had not already completed their voting procedures.

The late announcement created logistical problems and became a central issue in Bolsonaro’s challenge to the result. He argued that the decision undermined confidence in the election and demanded that the outcome be annulled.

However, approximately 34,330 additional votes were cast during the extended voting period, according to an analysis cited in reporting about the election. That represented roughly 0.03% of all votes cast and was far smaller than Lula’s winning margin of approximately 4.4 million votes.

The available figures do not support the claim that the extra voting period changed the election’s outcome. Bolsonaro has not presented verified evidence demonstrating that the extension altered the result.

Lula Wins Fourth Presidential Term

Lula secured reelection after overcoming Bolsonaro’s lead in the first round of voting earlier in October. The president finished with approximately 64.3 million votes, compared with nearly 59.8 million for his opponent.

The victory made Lula the first Brazilian politician to win four presidential elections since the country’s return to democracy. He previously served two terms from 2003 through 2010 before returning to office after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in 2022.

The 2026 election took place amid significant political divisions over economic policy, public security and Brazil’s relationship with the United States. Bolsonaro campaigned on closer cooperation with Washington, lower government spending and tougher responses to crime.

Lula emphasized social welfare programs, economic support for lower-income households and the protection of democratic institutions. His victory preserved the current government’s political direction, although opposition parties retained considerable influence in Congress and state governments.

Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party performed strongly in several other contests held during the general election. The party won six governorships, 121 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 19 Senate seats, demonstrating that its political influence extends beyond the defeated presidential campaign.

Despite Flávio Bolsonaro’s rejection of the result, his own party recognized Lula’s victory. Party officials accepted the results of the presidential election alongside the victories secured by their candidates in other races.

International Observers Recognize Election Results

Brazil’s electoral authorities certified Lula’s victory, and international observers recognized the announced outcome. The Organization of American States and the Carter Center deployed observation missions to assess aspects of the election.

The Carter Center praised the administration of the presidential runoff in a statement released October 27. Its experts said the electoral authorities had organized voting and counting effectively despite complications surrounding the late extension.

The organization also acknowledged that some judicial decisions during the election had been inconsistent or contradictory. Its assessment specifically identified the two-hour voting extension as an example of the challenges facing election administrators.

The Carter Center’s mission focused on election technology, legal procedures and voter education rather than conducting a comprehensive assessment of every polling location. That limitation is important when interpreting its findings, although the organization recognized the successful completion of the election.

The Organization of American States also monitored the election and recognized the official result. International leaders subsequently congratulated Lula, providing further diplomatic recognition of his victory.

Bolsonaro has continued alleging that the election was improperly conducted, but independent observers have not substantiated claims that fraud changed the outcome. His refusal to concede stands in contrast to his party’s acceptance of the official results.

Trump Questions Election as Lula Criticizes Departure

U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Bolsonaro’s arrival and questioned the fairness of Brazil’s election. Trump described the voting process as strange and suggested that the outcome appeared suspicious, although he offered no evidence demonstrating widespread fraud.

The Trump administration had granted visas to Bolsonaro and his family before they reached Florida. Trump also described the family favorably when reporters asked about their arrival in the United States.

Bolsonaro has cultivated a political relationship with Trump and visited the White House in May 2026. His campaign promoted stronger ties with Washington as part of a broader foreign policy agenda.

Lula responded critically to his opponent’s departure, saying Bolsonaro should have remained in Brazil to defend himself against the allegations under investigation. The president described the decision to leave as shameful and questioned why Bolsonaro had not stayed to challenge the accusations through legal proceedings.

The situation could complicate diplomatic relations because Brazil’s government views the election as settled while Bolsonaro continues disputing the result from the United States. Washington’s decision to welcome him may become another source of disagreement between the two governments.

Argentina’s involvement has also attracted attention because President Javier Milei maintains close political ties with the Bolsonaro family. Argentine officials confirmed the family’s entry into the country, while Milei’s administration rejected suggestions that Bolsonaro had formally requested asylum there.

Bolsonaro Declares Himself Brazil’s Rightful Leader

After reaching the United States, Bolsonaro released a public statement maintaining that the presidential election had been stolen. He initially described himself as Brazil’s elected president before revising the statement to identify himself as the country’s rightful leader.

The declaration contradicted the certified election result and the position taken by his own political party. Brazilian electoral authorities maintained that Lula had won in accordance with the country’s constitutional voting procedures.

Bolsonaro also rejected descriptions of his departure as an escape from justice. He said he had left Brazil to protect himself and his family from what he characterized as political persecution.

His statements have not established that the election was fraudulent or that the investigations against him are illegitimate. Those claims remain disputed and would require supporting evidence to prevail in legal proceedings.

The dispute recalls events following Jair Bolsonaro’s defeat in the 2022 presidential election. The former president also traveled to Florida before Lula took office, although he subsequently returned to Brazil.

Jair Bolsonaro was later sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in efforts to overturn the 2022 election. His conviction followed investigations into the attempted coup and the political violence that culminated in attacks on government buildings in Brasília on January 8, 2023.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s political situation is different because he has not been convicted in the financial investigations currently surrounding him. However, his departure raises questions about how Brazilian authorities may pursue those proceedings if he remains in the United States.

The senator’s immediate plans include a news conference in Miami, where he is expected to address the election and his departure from Brazil. His longer-term residence plans have not been confirmed, and Brazilian authorities have not announced whether they will seek additional legal measures following his failure to surrender his passports.
