Netflix Reports Strong Earnings but Cuts Advertising Forecast as Content Leadership Changes

By Digital News Editorial Team on October 21, 2026

Netflix posted higher third-quarter revenue and profit, but slower advertising expansion, the appointment of Peter Rice and roughly 1,000 job cuts raised questions about its next stage of growth.

Netflix reported higher revenue and earnings for the third quarter of 2026, but the streaming company lowered its advertising forecast as it reorganized its content leadership and eliminated approximately 1,000 jobs. The results, released October 20, showed that Netflix remains profitable even as questions grow about its ability to sustain rapid expansion.

Quarterly revenue reached approximately $12.9 billion, up 12% from the previous year. Diluted earnings rose to 87 cents per share from 59 cents a year earlier, while operating income increased 37% to $4.5 billion.

Despite those gains, Netflix reduced its expected 2026 advertising revenue from approximately $3 billion to $2.7 billion. Management attributed the change largely to delays in introducing new advertising capabilities and connecting them with commercial partners.

Investors reacted negatively to the revised outlook. Netflix shares fell during Wednesday trading as analysts weighed slower growth against the company’s substantial investment in programming, technology and international expansion.

The earnings announcement came during a major organizational transition. Netflix has appointed veteran television executive Peter Rice as its new chief content officer, replacing Bela Bajaria, while reducing its workforce by approximately 6%.

Earnings Improve as Revenue Growth Slows

Netflix generated an operating margin of 34.6% during the third quarter, compared with 28.2% one year earlier. The improvement reflected higher revenue and the timing of certain expenses.

Subscription growth, pricing changes and advertising all contributed to the company’s financial performance. Netflix also benefited from favorable currency movements, although revenue growth excluding currency effects was slightly lower.

The company said subscriber retention remained healthy across its regions. In the United States and globally, cancellations improved from a year earlier and were lower than management had expected.

Those developments helped Netflix maintain profitability even as revenue growth slowed from earlier periods. The company faces an increasingly competitive environment that includes established streaming services and free online video platforms.

Netflix expects fourth-quarter revenue of approximately $13.4 billion, representing another 12% year-over-year increase. Management forecasts a fourth-quarter operating margin of 26%, partly reflecting costs associated with its workforce reductions.

For the full year, the company projects $51.1 billion in revenue, or approximately 13% growth. Its expected annual operating margin is 31.5%, compared with 29.5% in 2025.

The figures suggest that Netflix continues to expand, although the pace of that expansion has become an important concern for investors.

Advertising Growth Falls Behind Expectations

Netflix’s advertising business remains one of its most important opportunities for generating additional revenue. However, the company acknowledged that progress has been slower than management originally anticipated.

During the earnings interview, co-CEO Greg Peters said the advertising operation was slightly behind the aggressive targets established for 2026. Delays involving product development and integrations with advertising partners contributed to the shortfall.

Netflix now expects advertising revenue of approximately $2.7 billion this year, roughly 10% below its earlier $3 billion projection.

The reduced estimate does not mean advertising revenue is declining. Management continues to expect substantial year-over-year growth, although the operation will generate less revenue than previously anticipated.

Netflix has invested heavily in its advertising technology, including tools designed to help marketers identify audiences and measure campaign performance. These capabilities are necessary for competing with established digital advertising platforms.

Its Netflix Ads Suite includes technologies for buying advertising space, evaluating results and connecting campaigns with external systems. The company is developing additional features intended to improve targeting and help advertisers measure purchases or other customer actions.

Netflix has also announced improvements to its Conversion API and a new Netflix Pixel. These tools are intended to connect advertising exposure with measurable business outcomes.

Partnerships with companies including The Trade Desk, Yahoo and Amazon Ads are designed to make Netflix advertising easier to purchase through systems already used by major brands.

For advertisers, the ability to demonstrate results is particularly important. A campaign that reaches a large audience may still struggle to attract investment if marketers cannot determine whether it influenced consumer behavior.

Peters said the delays should not fundamentally change the company’s long-term advertising opportunity. However, Netflix must demonstrate that its technology improvements can support stronger commercial results.

Peter Rice Takes Over Content Leadership

Netflix is also making a significant change to the executive team responsible for its films and television series. Peter Rice has been appointed chief content officer, effective October 26, replacing Bela Bajaria.

Rice previously held senior positions at Fox and Disney, overseeing major television and entertainment businesses. His experience includes working with established creative teams and managing programming across different distribution platforms.

The appointment reflects Netflix’s effort to strengthen its content development and improve performance in the United States. Although the company continues to produce successful international programming, management believes its American slate has room for improvement.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the company does not need to abandon its central entertainment strategy. Instead, executives want better execution and more programming capable of attracting large audiences.

Bajaria played an important role in expanding Netflix’s international content operations. During her tenure, the company developed programming across numerous languages and built stronger relationships with producers outside the United States.

Her departure comes as Netflix faces pressure to maintain viewer interest while balancing growing production costs. Rice will inherit the responsibility of delivering successful series and films across a worldwide audience.

The leadership change also follows Netflix’s unsuccessful attempt earlier in 2026 to acquire major Warner Bros. Discovery entertainment assets. The company is now concentrating on strengthening its existing operations.

International Programming Remains a Strength

Netflix continues to benefit from programming produced outside the United States. India was a particularly strong market during the third quarter, with viewing hours increasing 24% from the previous year.

Revenue in India grew approximately 18% on a currency-neutral basis. Netflix also reported its strongest quarter for net paid membership additions in the country.

Local productions helped attract viewers, demonstrating the value of creating entertainment designed for specific audiences rather than relying exclusively on American titles.

The company highlighted Indian programming including Lock Upp, Musafir Cafe and Operation Safed Sagar. These productions contributed to increased engagement and supported the service’s regional growth.

Netflix has also expanded its relationships with broadcasters and production companies in other markets. Its agreements include partnerships designed to bring additional locally produced films and television series to subscribers.

One such arrangement involves Globo in Brazil, where Netflix plans to add a collection of productions beginning in December. The agreement includes films, television dramas and other programming intended to appeal to Brazilian audiences.

In France, Netflix has pursued partnerships with established television broadcasters to expand the range of entertainment available through its service.

These arrangements support the company’s strategy of offering international programming alongside Hollywood productions. They also provide opportunities to reach viewers who prefer entertainment produced in their own language.

Netflix Cuts About 1,000 Jobs

The earnings report followed the announcement of approximately 1,000 job cuts, representing about 6% of Netflix’s workforce. The reductions are among the largest the company has made since 2022.

The layoffs primarily affect product development, technology, legal and human resources operations. Netflix said the changes would help redirect spending toward its most important business priorities.

Sarandos and Peters informed employees that the company needed to make disciplined decisions about where to invest its resources. The restructuring comes despite continued revenue growth and strong operating profitability.

Netflix expects the workforce changes to affect fourth-quarter financial results through restructuring-related costs. Its full-year operating margin forecast also includes the impact of those expenses.

The reductions demonstrate that strong earnings do not necessarily prevent staff cuts. Technology and entertainment companies frequently review their workforces as production needs, distribution strategies and business priorities change.

For Netflix, the layoffs accompany a broader reassessment of how it develops content and technology while managing competition.

Live Events and Films Remain Important

Despite the leadership transition, Netflix intends to maintain its focus on professionally produced entertainment. Films, scripted series, documentaries and live events continue to account for the overwhelming majority of its spending and revenue.

Live programming is becoming an increasingly important part of that strategy. Sporting events can attract large audiences at a specific time, creating opportunities for advertisers interested in reaching viewers simultaneously.

Netflix has expanded into professional boxing and major American sporting events while continuing to develop original entertainment. These broadcasts complement its traditional programming rather than replace it.

The company is also adjusting its approach to theatrical releases. Certain films receive limited cinema runs, while larger productions may receive broader releases depending on their audiences and commercial potential.

Licensing agreements remain another source of programming. Netflix continues to acquire films and series from other entertainment companies to supplement its original productions.

Management believes that combining exclusive entertainment, licensed programming and live events gives subscribers reasons to maintain their memberships throughout the year.

Investors Watch the Next Stage of Growth

Netflix’s latest results present a mixed picture of its financial position. Revenue and operating profits increased significantly, but its advertising forecast was reduced and questions remain about the pace of future expansion.

The company continues to generate substantial income from subscriptions, providing resources for new content and technology. However, advertising has become an important part of management’s expectations for future growth.

The appointment of Rice signals an effort to improve content performance without abandoning Netflix’s existing business model. At the same time, the layoffs indicate a renewed emphasis on controlling expenses and reallocating resources.

Reuters reported October 21 that more than 20 financial firms had reduced their price targets for Netflix shares after the earnings announcement. Analysts cited concerns about advertising growth, competition and the sustainability of the company’s expansion.

Netflix’s fourth-quarter results will provide the next major assessment of its progress. Investors will be watching whether the company meets its $13.4 billion revenue forecast and delivers improvements in advertising technology while its new content leadership begins work.
