Rio Ngumoha delivers two assists and Alexis Mac Allister scores twice as Liverpool overturns an early deficit at Anfield to maintain its perfect European record.

Liverpool produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, extending its winning start to the UEFA Champions League season. After conceding twice in the opening 29 minutes, Liverpool recovered through two goals from Alexis Mac Allister and one each from Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz. Teenager Rio Ngumoha helped transform the match with two assists in a standout performance.

The victory gave Liverpool three wins from its first three Champions League matches of the 2026-27 season. Villarreal threatened to spoil the comeback with a late goal, but manager Andoni Iraola’s side survived the closing minutes to secure another European victory.

Villarreal Takes Command With Two Early Goals

Villarreal made an immediate impact when Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk attempted a header back toward goalkeeper Alisson, but the misplaced ball allowed Mikautadze to intercept and finish from a difficult angle.

The mistake exposed Liverpool’s defensive uncertainty and gave Villarreal an early advantage. The visitors continued to find space in dangerous areas, putting pressure on a Liverpool defense that struggled to contain their attacking movement.

Sergi Cardona doubled Villarreal’s lead in the 29th minute after Nathan Saliba played a pass through Liverpool’s defensive line. Cardona raced forward and calmly placed his shot into the bottom corner, leaving the home side facing a two-goal deficit before the half-hour mark.

The visitors had established control through quick passing and effective movement between Liverpool’s defenders. With Liverpool unable to match Villarreal’s intensity during the opening stages, the possibility of a damaging home defeat was growing.

Mac Allister and Araújo Bring Liverpool Level

Liverpool began its recovery in the 36th minute when Mac Allister headed home a corner delivered by Kostas Tsimikas. The midfielder’s well-placed header reduced the deficit and gave the Anfield crowd renewed hope before halftime.

Mac Allister nearly added another goal shortly afterward, sending an effort narrowly wide as Liverpool increased the pressure. Villarreal, which had appeared comfortable earlier in the half, suddenly found itself defending against a more aggressive home side.

Ngumoha then produced the first of his two decisive assists in first-half stoppage time. The young winger delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, where Araújo arrived at the far post and headed past goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.

The equalizer in the 47th minute of the first half completed Liverpool’s recovery from its poor opening. The teams entered halftime level at 2-2 despite Villarreal having controlled much of the first 30 minutes.

Rio Ngumoha Inspires the Second-Half Comeback

Liverpool emerged after the break with greater attacking confidence and began creating opportunities across Villarreal’s defensive line. Iraola replaced Araújo with Florian Wirtz at halftime, adjusting his formation to give Liverpool more attacking options.

Ngumoha continued to trouble Villarreal’s defenders with his pace, close control and direct running. His willingness to attack Sergi Cardona helped Liverpool create chances from wide positions and forced the visitors into increasingly difficult defensive situations.

The decisive moment arrived in the 65th minute when Ngumoha carried the ball past his opponent and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Mac Allister met the pass and struck a shot that went in off the crossbar, giving Liverpool its first lead of the match.

Just three minutes later, Wirtz extended Liverpool’s advantage with a left-footed finish into the bottom corner. The German midfielder’s goal made the score 4-2 and appeared to put the result beyond Villarreal’s reach.

Ngumoha’s two assists also earned him a place in Liverpool’s record books. According to the club, he became Liverpool’s youngest player to register an assist in European competition at 18 years and 52 days old.

The previous record belonged to Michael Owen, who had provided a European assist at 18 years and 324 days old against Valencia in November 1998. Ngumoha’s achievement added another milestone to his rapid development in Liverpool’s first team.

Villarreal’s Late Goal Creates a Nervous Finish

Despite Liverpool’s improved second-half performance, Villarreal continued to threaten on the counterattack. The Spanish side refused to abandon its attacking approach and eventually found a way back into the contest.

Tani Oluwaseyi scored in the 87th minute after receiving a delivery from Ayoze Pérez. His finish reduced Liverpool’s lead to 4-3 and created a tense ending as Villarreal searched for an equalizer.

Liverpool defended its narrow advantage through the remaining minutes and held on for the victory. The final whistle brought celebrations at Anfield, where supporters had watched their team recover from a seemingly commanding Villarreal lead.

The defensive mistakes remained a concern despite the result. Liverpool has now conceded three goals in consecutive Champions League matches, having previously beaten Austrian side LASK 6-3.

Iraola Praises Liverpool’s Response

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola acknowledged that Villarreal had been the stronger side during the opening stages. Speaking at his post-match press conference, he said the visitors deserved credit for their performance and admitted Liverpool had started too slowly.

Iraola explained that changes to Liverpool’s positioning helped the team gain greater control. Moving Ryan Gravenberch into a different role and introducing Wirtz gave Liverpool additional options for dealing with Villarreal’s midfield.

The manager also praised Ngumoha’s attacking influence and the team’s ability to respond after falling behind. Liverpool’s improved movement and pressing helped reverse the momentum that had favored Villarreal during the first half.

The match also carried personal significance for Iraola and Villarreal manager Iñigo Pérez, who have known each other for years through their playing and coaching careers. Their tactical contest produced one of the most entertaining matches of the Champions League’s early league phase.

Liverpool Maintains Perfect Champions League Record

Liverpool’s victory followed earlier European wins against Atlético Madrid and LASK. Those results give the English club nine points from its opening three matches in the competition’s league phase.

The Champions League now uses a league-phase format rather than the traditional group stage. Each team plays eight matches against different opponents before the standings determine direct qualification for the round of 16 or entry into the knockout-phase playoffs.

The result demonstrated Liverpool’s attacking strength while exposing defensive weaknesses that could become more costly against stronger opponents. Mac Allister’s two goals, Wirtz’s finish and Ngumoha’s creativity provided enough firepower to overcome three conceded goals.

Ngumoha received particular attention after the match for his impact against Villarreal’s defense. With Liverpool supporters celebrating his performance, the club played Duran Duran’s Rio at Anfield after the final whistle.

Liverpool leaves the match with its perfect European record intact and another important contribution from one of its youngest players. The team will continue its Champions League campaign with nine points secured, although its defensive performance remains an area for Iraola to address.
