ALCS Game 4 Postponed by Rain as Guardians and Rays Prepare for Saturday

Progressive Field before ALDS
By Digital News Editorial Team on October 16, 2026

Cleveland leads Tampa Bay 2-1 in the American League Championship Series. The rainout forces a revised schedule with four consecutive games possible before the World Series.

Game 4 of the American League Championship Series between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays was postponed Friday night, October 16, after persistent rain made playing conditions unsuitable at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Major League Baseball rescheduled the game for Saturday, October 17, at 8:08 p.m. Eastern Time.

The postponement comes with Cleveland holding a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Guardians moved ahead Thursday with a 3-2 victory powered by a two-run home run from rookie outfielder Petey Halpin.

The weather delay also changes the remaining postseason schedule. Game 5 will take place Sunday, October 18, at 5:08 p.m. Eastern, eliminating the scheduled day off between games.

Heavy Rain Forces ALCS Game 4 Postponement

Rain fell throughout much of Friday in Cleveland, creating uncertainty about whether the fourth game of the series could begin as scheduled.

Grounds crews worked to prepare Progressive Field while officials monitored conditions. Several Tampa Bay players continued warming up despite the rain, hoping the game could proceed.

The original 8:08 p.m. start time passed without a first pitch. MLB officials announced the postponement approximately one hour later.

According to the Associated Press, this was the first American League Championship Series postponement since 2019, when weather interrupted the postseason matchup between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.

The disruption followed another weather-related adjustment earlier in the series. Thursday’s Game 3 had been moved from an evening start to the afternoon because of rain in the forecast.

That scheduling change allowed the teams to complete Game 3 before the weather deteriorated.

Cleveland Guardians Hold 2-1 Series Lead

The Guardians enter Saturday’s matchup needing two additional victories to reach the World Series for the first time since 2016.

Cleveland regained control of the series Thursday with a narrow 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay. Halpin delivered the decisive blow with a two-run homer that helped the Guardians overcome the Rays.

The result followed two closely contested opening games that left the series tied at one victory apiece.

Cleveland won Game 1 on Monday, October 12, before Tampa Bay responded with a victory in Game 2 on Tuesday.

The Guardians then moved ahead in Thursday’s third game, putting additional pressure on the Rays before the postponement.

A Cleveland victory Saturday would create a 3-1 series advantage, leaving the Guardians one win away from capturing the American League pennant.

For Tampa Bay, winning Game 4 would even the series and guarantee that the matchup returns to Florida for at least one additional game.

Shawn Armstrong Remains Guardians’ Game 4 Opener

The unexpected day off initially raised questions about Cleveland’s pitching strategy.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt had planned to use right-hander Shawn Armstrong as an opener Friday, beginning a bullpen game designed to preserve the team’s starting pitchers for later contests.

The postponement created an opportunity to reconsider that approach, particularly because Foster Griffin would have additional rest following his Game 1 start.

Griffin allowed two runs over five innings in Monday’s series opener. Cleveland also has Parker Messick and Gavin Williams available as potential starters for the remaining games.

However, MLB reported after the postponement that Cleveland would keep Armstrong as its Game 4 opener rather than change the pitching plan.

The strategy allows Vogt to manage his pitching staff with the possibility of several consecutive games ahead.

Tanner Bibee and Joey Cantillo are among the pitchers who could contribute multiple innings after Armstrong, although their exact roles will depend on game circumstances.

The bullpen approach carries some risk because Cleveland may need significant relief pitching contributions during the remaining games.

With no scheduled rest day after Saturday, the availability of individual pitchers could become an important factor in the series.

Tampa Bay Rays Stick With Nick Martinez

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash also decided against changing his scheduled Game 4 starter following the rainout.

Right-hander Nick Martinez will start Saturday against Cleveland, according to MLB’s report following the postponement.

Martinez had been preparing to pitch Friday before the weather forced the schedule change.

The Rays hope his outing will help them avoid falling behind three games to one in the series.

Tampa Bay’s offense has faced challenges against Cleveland pitching, particularly during Thursday’s narrow defeat.

Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz remain important parts of the Rays’ lineup as the team attempts to regain momentum.

Cash has not committed publicly to a complete pitching rotation for the remaining games. His decisions will depend on Saturday’s result and how many innings Martinez can provide.

The compressed schedule could also influence when the Rays use their most effective relief pitchers.

Updated 2026 ALCS Schedule After Rainout

Major League Baseball confirmed the remaining game dates and starting times following Friday’s postponement.

  • Game 4: Saturday, October 17, 8:08 p.m. ET — Progressive Field, Cleveland.
  • Game 5: Sunday, October 18, 5:08 p.m. ET — Progressive Field, Cleveland.
  • Game 6: Monday, October 19, 8:08 p.m. ET — Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, if necessary.
  • Game 7: Tuesday, October 20, 8:08 p.m. ET — Tropicana Field, if necessary.

Games 6 and 7 remain scheduled for Florida if neither team wins the series before then.

The revised schedule means the Guardians and Rays could play four consecutive days without a break.

That creates additional challenges for both managers, who must account for pitcher workloads, player recovery and late-game bullpen decisions.

MLB also announced ticket arrangements for fans affected by the postponement.

Fans holding tickets to Friday’s originally scheduled Game 4 can use those tickets for Sunday’s Game 5. Tickets originally issued for Saturday’s game remain valid for Saturday’s contest, now designated Game 4.

Milwaukee Brewers Await American League Champion

While Cleveland and Tampa Bay compete for the American League pennant, the Milwaukee Brewers have already secured their place in the World Series.

Milwaukee completed a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday with a 6-4 victory in the National League Championship Series.

The Brewers are returning to the World Series for the first time since 1982, ending a 44-year absence from baseball’s championship round.

Milwaukee finished the regular season with 103 victories and carried that success into the postseason.

The club overcame an early four-run deficit in Thursday’s decisive game, with home runs from Garrett Mitchell and David Hamilton helping turn the contest around.

The Brewers will host Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, October 23, at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Their opponent will be determined by the Cleveland-Tampa Bay series, which could continue through Tuesday if all seven games are required.

The rainout creates an unusual situation in which the National League champion has a lengthy break while the American League teams face a demanding final stretch.

Milwaukee can use the time to organize its pitching rotation and allow players to recover before the championship series begins.

ALCS Game 4 Could Shape the Rest of the Series

The postponement gives both clubs an additional day to prepare, but it also removes a valuable rest day from the remaining schedule.

Cleveland has the advantage in the standings and can move within one victory of the World Series with a Saturday win.

Tampa Bay must find a way to overcome the Guardians’ pitching strategy and generate enough offense to even the series.

Both managers will have to balance immediate needs against the possibility of playing through Tuesday.

The postponed Game 4 is scheduled to begin Saturday at 8:08 p.m. Eastern Time at Progressive Field, with Armstrong opening for Cleveland and Martinez starting for Tampa Bay.
