Steven Soderbergh will oversee the final weeks of filming while Matt Reeves addresses a family matter. Reeves remains involved in the sequel, scheduled for February 18, 2028.
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh will help complete filming on The Batman Part II after filmmaker Matt Reeves temporarily stepped away to address a private family matter. The unexpected change follows a production pause announced earlier in October 2026, but Reeves has confirmed that he is not leaving the superhero sequel.
Soderbergh will oversee the remaining weeks of principal photography while working closely with Reeves and the production team. Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced the arrangement on October 15, emphasizing that Reeves will retain creative control over the film.
The decision allows production to move forward without requiring Reeves to return to the set immediately. Robert Pattinson remains attached to star as Bruce Wayne and Batman, with the film currently scheduled for theatrical release on February 18, 2028.
In a statement, Warner Bros. explained that Soderbergh approached Reeves and offered his assistance. The studio said both filmmakers would collaborate with the cast and crew to preserve the director’s original vision.
Soderbergh also praised Reeves and his work on the first Batman film, which arrived in theaters in March 2022. He described its storytelling and visual approach as carefully developed, emphasizing his intention to respect the existing production.
“The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film,” Soderbergh said.
Reeves publicly confirmed that his absence from the set does not mean he is abandoning the project. He expressed appreciation for Soderbergh’s willingness to assist during a difficult personal period.
“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” Reeves wrote in a social media statement.
The filmmaker also thanked Soderbergh for helping him complete principal photography. The specific nature of Reeves’ family situation has not been publicly disclosed, and the studios have not provided additional personal details.
Production Pause Creates Unexpected Challenge
The production interruption was first announced on October 5, when Warner Bros. and DC Studios confirmed that filming had temporarily stopped. At the time, the companies expressed their support for Reeves and said they expected work on the film to continue.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the production had paused while Reeves attended to his family matter. The announcement raised questions about the sequel’s schedule, particularly because its theatrical release had already been postponed several times.
Filming began in London in June 2026, with Reeves directing from a screenplay he wrote with Mattson Tomlin. By the time production paused, much of the planned photography had already been completed.
Actor Robert Pattinson also addressed the interruption during a public appearance in October. He acknowledged that filming had stopped temporarily but expressed confidence that the production team would work through the situation.
The latest arrangement provides a clearer path toward completing the remaining scenes. Soderbergh will direct the final portion of filming while Reeves remains in communication with the team.
Once principal photography is finished, Reeves is expected to oversee post-production, including editing and the final development of the film’s visual and narrative presentation. The studios have not announced a revised filming completion date.
Why Steven Soderbergh Was Chosen
Soderbergh has built a filmmaking career that includes crime dramas, independent productions, large studio releases and experimental projects. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for Traffic, released in 2000.
His other notable films include Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich, Contagion and Magic Mike. More recently, he directed Black Bag and Presence, demonstrating his continued interest in different genres and production styles.
He is also known for working efficiently and frequently taking an active role in cinematography and editing. Those skills could prove useful when filming material that must match scenes already completed by another director.
However, the studios have stressed that Soderbergh is not replacing Reeves as the creative leader of The Batman Part II. His assignment is specifically focused on completing principal photography while maintaining continuity with the established production.
The unusual collaboration also reflects Soderbergh’s admiration for Reeves. Rather than being recruited to change the direction of the sequel, he volunteered to help bring an existing project through its final filming stages.
Robert Pattinson Returns With an Expanded Cast
The Batman Part II continues the version of Gotham City introduced in Reeves’ 2022 film. That movie portrayed a younger Bruce Wayne investigating a series of murders connected to corruption and organized crime.
Pattinson returns in the title role, alongside several familiar performers from the original film. Jeffrey Wright is returning as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin.
The sequel also includes Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan among its new cast members. Their involvement has added interest to the developing story, although the production has kept many plot details confidential.
The first film established a darker detective-centered approach to Batman. It explored the relationship between Gotham’s political institutions, criminal networks and a vigilante attempting to understand his role in the city.
Reeves subsequently expanded that fictional world through the HBO series The Penguin, which followed Farrell’s character after the events of the movie. The television series helped establish additional characters and conflicts within the same continuity.
The sequel is being developed as part of Reeves’ separate Batman universe rather than the main DC Universe overseen by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Release Date Remains February 2028
The production change comes after several scheduling adjustments. The Batman Part II was originally expected to reach theaters in October 2025 before its release was moved to October 2026 and subsequently to October 2027.
Warner Bros. announced another postponement in June 2026, establishing February 18, 2028, as the latest release date.
Despite the recent production interruption, the studio has not announced another delay. The current schedule therefore remains unchanged, although the exact timetable for completing photography has not been publicly confirmed.
Soderbergh’s participation provides the production with an experienced filmmaker who can supervise remaining scenes while Reeves handles his family responsibilities. The arrangement also allows the original director to remain closely involved without being physically present during the final weeks of shooting.
For audiences anticipating Pattinson’s return as Batman, the most important development is that the sequel now has a plan to finish filming. Reeves remains responsible for the finished movie, while Soderbergh’s immediate task is to help complete the footage needed for its planned February 2028 release.
