The Tampa Bay Rays swept the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series after a controversial fan interference ruling overturned Anthony Volpe’s potential game-tying home run.
The New York Yankees’ quest for a championship ended Wednesday night when the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep in the American League Division Series. The Yankees had a chance to change their season’s trajectory in Game 3 but a fan interference call altered the outcome of a key play. Anthony Volpe stepped up to the plate with two outs in the sixth inning and appeared to hit a two-run home run toward left field.
The ball initially seemed to clear the fence but umpires later reviewed the play and determined that a fan had interfered with it. The home run was overturned by Major League Baseball after reviewing all available angles due to fan interference. A spectator reached over the fence and touched the ball while it was still in play which led to the call being reversed.
Volpe was awarded an RBI double instead of a home run which allowed the Rays to hold their narrow lead. The play brought back memories of the famous Jeffrey Maier incident from the 1996 postseason when a fan interfered with a ball.
Despite having one of the best pitching rotations in the league the Yankees were unable to overcome the loss according to Yahoo Sports. Tampa Bay’s bullpen protected its slim lead after Victor Mesa Jr. hit a two-run home run off Max Fried in the top of the sixth inning according to a report from The Sporting News. Mesa’s hit broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Rays a 4-2 lead.
The Rays advanced to the ALCS to face either the Chicago White Sox or Cleveland Guardians. Yankees fans were visibly upset after the game with many expressing frustration over the outcome.
Manager Aaron Boone admitted his team had lost the series and acknowledged the Rays’ strong performance as ESPN reported. The Rays have a much smaller payroll than the Yankees and were able to make the most of their opportunities. Victor Mesa Jr. was one of several players who helped Tampa Bay succeed in crucial moments.
The Yankees had hoped to compete for another championship but were unable to win any games in the Division Series. This season marked a disappointing end for the team that had entered October with high expectations.
The replay center confirmed that the fan’s interference occurred over the field of play and that no home run would have been awarded. After the game the fan who interfered was escorted out of Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees now prepare for the off-season while the Rays move on to face a tough opponent in the ALCS. Tampa Bay won Game 3 by a final score of 4-3.
