By Digital News Editorial Team on October 7, 2026

England responded to an opening defeat against Spain with three straight victories as Harry Kane and Anthony Gordon helped lead a strong Nations League window.

England’s recent international break has been filled with notable performances and tactical decisions under manager Thomas Tuchel. The team played four Nations League matches in a condensed window stretching from September 21 to October 6. The extended international window combined the usual September and October periods into one block.

The team faced Spain at Wembley and suffered a 3-2 defeat in its opening Nations League match. England then responded with a 2-0 victory over Czechia in Prague before beating Croatia 7-0 in Rijeka. The run ended with a 3-0 victory over Czechia at Wembley.

Anthony Gordon emerged as a standout performer during the break after scoring in each of England’s first three Nations League matches. His form has also been notable following his summer move from Newcastle United to Barcelona. Gordon has become an important option for Tuchel on the left side of England’s attack.

James Trafford started the match against Spain and was beaten by Mikel Oyarzabal for the decisive goal. Jordan Pickford remained another experienced option in the squad. England’s goalkeeper choices gave Tuchel a chance to assess his options after the World Cup.

Bukayo Saka continued to show his value as an attacking player. He scored twice in the 7-0 victory over Croatia while Harry Kane also scored twice. Jude Bellingham added a goal and three assists in the dominant performance.

Trent Alexander-Arnold also strengthened his case for a larger role after returning to the England squad. He provided an assist during the 2-0 victory over Czechia in Prague and earned praise from Tuchel for his performance. Reece James was not selected for this international window.

Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo were originally selected but withdrew because of injuries. Declan Rice and Cole Palmer were also among the players forced to withdraw. The absences created opportunities for other members of Tuchel’s squad.

England’s performance against Croatia was one of the strongest displays of the break. Gordon scored while Kane and Saka each struck twice in a 7-0 victory that demonstrated England’s attacking depth. Alex Scott later withdrew from the squad after suffering a thigh injury during that game.

England followed the Croatia victory with another clean sheet against Czechia at Wembley. Harry Kane scored twice in the 3-0 win and reached 125 England appearances to equal Peter Shilton’s national record. England finished the four-match window with three victories and one defeat.

Tuchel’s approach has emphasized flexibility in key positions across the team. England scored 14 goals during the four Nations League matches and now sits second behind Spain in Group A3. The team is close to securing a place in the quarter-finals.

England will next face Croatia at Wembley on November 12 before traveling to play Spain three days later.

The international break has proven to be an important period in shaping the team’s identity under Tuchel’s leadership.
