Brewers Take 2-0 NLDS Lead After Two Dramatic Wins Over Padres

Jackson Chourio helped Milwaukee survive a bizarre roof-cable play in Game 1 before delivering the walk-off hit in Game 2.

The Milwaukee Brewers took a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday night. Jackson Chourio hit a two-run homer in the third inning to tie the game 2-2. William Contreras hit a solo homer in the seventh to give Milwaukee the lead.

The game was nearly turned in the ninth inning when Ty France hit a ball that struck a roof cable and dropped into Jackson Chourio’s glove. The ball left France’s bat at 105.3 mph with a 49-degree launch angle but it is not certain that it would have been a home run. American Family Field rules state that balls hitting the roof over fair territory are still in play.

This was not the first time such a situation occurred at American Family Field, as it happened during the NLDS in 2008. Padres manager Craig Stammen called the outcome a bad break and said it looked like a possible home run.

San Diego’s offense struggled in Game 1, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranding 12 runners.

Luis Campusano’s RBI single in the second was their only hit with runners in scoring position. King posted a 3.21 ERA, 185 innings and 159 strikeouts during the regular season. He pitched seven scoreless innings against the Cubs in the Wild Card Series.

Game 2 was played Sunday with the American Family Field roof open. Michael King started for San Diego and retired the first 14 Milwaukee hitters before the Brewers broke through. In the ninth inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Jackson Chourio delivered a single that scored Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick, according to a report from foxsports.com.

Chourio became just the third Brewers player to record a game-ending hit in the postseason, ESPN reported. Padres closer Mason Miller admitted he didn’t do his job and felt the result was disappointing. Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised his team’s performance in the game.

The Brewers’ win puts them one game away from a return to the NLCS.

The Brewers have made the playoffs eight times since 2018 and reached the NLCS in 2018 and 2025. Milwaukee’s last World Series appearance was in 1982, when they lost to the Cardinals in seven games.

San Diego has made the playoffs five times since 2020 and reached the NLCS in 2022. Despite their recent struggles, both teams are still in contention for a spot in the NLCS.
