Max Verstappen secured his first pole of the 2026 Formula One season at Sepang as the Bahrain Grand Prix is temporarily being held in Malaysia.
Max Verstappen has taken pole position at the Formula One race in Malaysia and marked a significant achievement for the Dutch driver and his team. This was Red Bull’s first pole position of the season and it came as a surprise to many after a difficult start to the campaign. Verstappen’s performance during qualifying showed that the team had made progress in recent races.
He drove with confidence and precision around the Sepang International Circuit which is a track known for its challenging layout. The result was especially meaningful as it marked Red Bull’s first pole position since becoming a power unit manufacturer with Ford.
Verstappen said he was happy with the outcome and expressed his ambition to win the race on Sunday according to Motorsport Week. He emphasized that the race would be difficult due to high temperatures and the strain on car components. Despite the challenges Verstappen remains optimistic about his chances of victory.
Lewis Hamilton finished second in qualifying just behind Verstappen by 0.298 seconds according to The Guardian. Hamilton’s result was his best qualifying position of the season.
The race is being held in Malaysia under the name Bahrain Grand Prix due to conflict in the Middle East. The Sepang circuit was the venue for the Malaysian Grand Prix between 1999 and 2017.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar qualified third but he was penalized for using a new engine and will start from eighth. Kimi Antonelli who leads the championship will start from third on the grid after Hadjar’s penalty. Antonelli’s first Q2 lap was deleted after he exceeded track limits and he had to make another attempt.
Despite the setback Antonelli remained positive about the team’s performance. He noted that Verstappen and Ferrari had done well in qualifying.
The Red Bull team has been working to improve the car’s performance throughout the season. Although Verstappen continues to face issues with energy management he is encouraged by recent progress. The team’s development efforts may also benefit their performance in the upcoming season.
Mercedes which had hoped to see improvements with its latest upgrades did not perform as expected in Malaysia. This outcome may prompt the team to review how their new package affects overall performance.
George Russell who is currently trailing Antonelli in the championship standings will start from seventh on the grid. The race is expected to be a close contest with Verstappen and Hamilton starting from the front row. The opening laps of the race will be crucial especially with the high temperatures and tire management challenges.
The weekend’s results suggest that Red Bull is on the right track with Verstappen showing signs of improvement.
The team’s progress could be a sign of what is to come in the rest of the season and beyond.
