Disney+ has stopped development of the planned Gargoyles live-action series while the franchise continues through comics written by original co-creator Greg Weisman.
Disney’s planned live-action Gargoyles series is no longer moving forward at Disney+. Variety reported that the show was no longer moving forward on Disney+. The original animated version of Gargoyles ran from 1994 to 1997 and followed a group of creatures protecting New York City.
Keith David voiced the main character Goliath in the original series. The new series was being developed by writer Gary Dauberman and production company Atomic Monster.
It was based on the cult classic animated show with a logline describing Goliath as the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors.
Despite the cancellation fans continue to support the franchise in other forms according to Dread Central. Comic books have become a way for the Gargoyles universe to live on according to a report from Screen Rant. Dynamite Entertainment has been publishing Disney-related comic books for years.
Gargoyles co-creator Greg Weisman returned to write a new ongoing comic series in December 2022. The comic continues the story from where the animated series left off. A separate 2025 miniseries called Gargoyles: Demona follows Demona and her adopted daughter Angelika as they travel the world across several centuries.
Angelika is shown as a kind-hearted character who does good deeds throughout the story. Demona remains more complex and shows both kindness and cruelty in her actions. Readers see Demona trying to raise Angelika while also dealing with her own bitterness.
The comic series draws comparisons between Demona and Angelika’s relationship and that of Mystique and Rogue. Angelika eventually dies. Her death deepens Demona’s bitterness toward humanity after centuries of immortal life.
Comic book readers don’t need to have seen the original show to enjoy the new series. Newcomers can jump into the comic and still understand what’s happening. The main comic series starts by explaining the world of Gargoyles in a clear way.
It introduces characters quickly and focuses on storytelling rather than background details.
The comic series is considered a strong continuation of the franchise. Fans have expressed hope that the live-action version might still happen someday.
The original animated series remains a favorite among many fans. While the live-action version is no longer moving forward fans can still enjoy the comic books and other media related to Gargoyles. The comic book series offers a fresh look at the characters without needing prior knowledge of the show.
