Legendary hip-hop duo Outkast has filed a lawsuit against rapper Ovrkast for allegedly using a name that closely resembles its own. The lawsuit claims that Ovrkast’s use of the name causes confusion among fans and violates trademark laws. Outkast’s trademark holding company, High Schoolers LLC, is behind the suit.
The case centers around the name Ovrkast, which Outkast says is nearly identical to its own name. The lawsuit also accuses the rapper of unfair competition and breach of contract. Outkast’s lawyers say they sent a cease-and-desist letter to Ovrkast more than a year ago.
Court records show the letter was sent in June 2025. Negotiations followed and eventually led to an agreement for Wilson to change his stage name. The proposed new name was Overkxst.
However, Outkast says that Ovrkast later refused to actually make the switch. The deadline for changing the name was extended to July 15, 2026, but Wilson decided to “renege” on the negotiated agreement and suggest alternate names that had previously been rejected by the plaintiffs. The lawsuit says the original agreement was valid and binding, and that Ovrkast violated it.
The agreement allegedly required Wilson to stop using Ovrkast on social media, streaming services, merchandise, advertising and other places connected with his music career. KQED reported that Wilson was still using the Ovrkast name when the lawsuit became public. He also released the single “Knock” under that name on September 10.
Outkast’s lawyers argue that consumers already associate the name Ovrkast with Outkast. Evidence of this confusion comes from a 2025 Rolling Stone interview with Ovrkast. In that interview, the rapper admitted fans sometimes mistake his name for Outkast.
He said people “read Ovrkast [as] Outkast” and sometimes believe they have seen the famous duo’s name. The lawsuit claims that this kind of confusion supports Outkast’s trademark allegations. Outkast’s lawyers quote the rapper’s own words to support their claim of actual confusion.
The lawsuit seeks a court order to permanently ban Ovrkast from using the name. It also asks for monetary damages, including punitive and compensatory awards. The suit includes a request to destroy any merchandise bearing the disputed name.
High Schoolers LLC is seeking a jury trial. The federal docket lists the case as High Schoolers, LLC v. Wilson and identifies U.S. District Judge Eleanor L. Ross as the presiding judge.
This is not the first time Outkast has taken legal action over its intellectual property. In 2024, the group sued an EDM duo calling itself ATLiens. The name ATLiens comes from Outkast’s 1996 album of the same name. That case settled in February 2026 with the terms remaining confidential.
Ovrkast has publicly reacted to the latest lawsuit. He posted “Ouch” in response to news of the case and later wrote on Instagram that he had thought there was goodwill between him and André 3000 and Big Boi. KQED reported that Wilson did not respond to its request for comment.
However, the lawsuit relies heavily on the rapper’s own comments from the Rolling Stone interview. André 3000 and Big Boi have not personally issued a detailed public statement about the case. Pitchfork reported that it contacted Outkast’s representatives for comment.
The case was filed in federal court in Atlanta, Georgia. Ovrkast is an Oakland-based rapper and producer whose real name is Silas Wilson. He has released music under the Ovrkast name since before his 2020 project Try Again.
He has worked with artists like Drake and Earl Sweatshirt. AllMusic credits him with production work for Drake and with producing on Earl Sweatshirt’s Feet of Clay. His more recent work includes the 2025 project While the Iron Is Hot.
The lawsuit says Ovrkast had previously agreed to change his name to Overkxst by July 15, 2026. Outkast’s lawyers say he delayed paperwork and proposed two names that were rejected. Ovrkast continued to use the name past the deadline and received a breach notice on August 5. He was given until August 11 to comply with the agreement.
The lawsuit says that Ovrkast’s own statements confirm that confusion between the names has occurred among some listeners. Outkast argues that continued use of the name could make people incorrectly believe Wilson’s music, concerts or merchandise are connected with or approved by the duo.
The case raises questions about how much similarity in names is acceptable in the music industry. It also highlights the importance of trademark enforcement for established artists.
For now, the allegations have not been decided by a court. The case remains pending as High Schoolers LLC seeks to stop Wilson from using the Ovrkast name and recover damages it says resulted from the alleged infringement and breach of contract.
