Patrick Clancy, the former husband of Lindsay Clancy, spoke publicly for the first time since a jury could not reach a verdict in her trial for the deaths of their three children. He appeared on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” and said he forgave his ex-wife for the killings.
Clancy described how he struggled with thoughts of suicide after the children’s deaths and had a panic attack while testifying in court, according to The Baltimore Sun. He mentioned that the trial was emotionally difficult when the jury heard a recording of his 911 call, according to a report from eonline.com.
Clancy said he had to be taken to an ambulance during the proceedings due to the emotional toll. He told “60 Minutes” that his heart was pounding during what he described as a massive panic attack. He declined medication because he wanted to return to the courtroom and finish his testimony.
The case has been surrounded by online conspiracy theories, some of which accused Patrick Clancy himself of involvement in the children’s deaths. Clancy said the accusations have been painful and distract from what he believes should be a discussion about perinatal mental health.
The trial concluded with a mistrial on September 4th, according to reports. Jurors deliberated for seven days but could not reach a unanimous decision on whether Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for killing the children.
Several jurors later said the panel was divided 11-1. Eleven jurors favored finding her not criminally responsible while one juror disagreed.
Patrick Clancy is not the only person to speak out after the legal proceedings ended in a deadlock. Michael Desronvil, the lone holdout juror, also spoke publicly about the case after the mistrial.
He said he had no doubts that Lindsay Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings. Desronvil disputed statements from other jurors who said he had expressed reasonable doubt during deliberations.
Lindsay Clancy, a former nurse, has admitted to killing her children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. She pleaded not guilty to murder, with the defense saying her actions were due to postpartum psychosis.
Her attorneys did not dispute that she killed the children. Instead they argued that she was not criminally responsible because severe mental illness prevented her from understanding the wrongfulness of her actions. Prosecutors argued that she knew right from wrong and deliberately planned the killings.
Patrick Clancy testified that his wife had mental health issues after giving birth to Callan in May 2022. He said her condition worsened in December 2022 after she began taking a new medication.
Clancy told him that she had intrusive thoughts about harming their children and herself. He did not believe she intended to carry out any of those thoughts. Patrick testified that no medical professional told him Lindsay should not be left alone with the children.
In December 2022, Lindsay Clancy sought hospital treatment after continuing to express suicidal thoughts. She checked herself into McLean Hospital on New Year’s Eve and was released on January 5, 2023.
She had sought mental health treatment several times before the killings. Her treatment included emergency room visits, outpatient care and psychiatric medications.
Patrick Clancy described the last time he saw their children alive as a positive moment. He said that on January 24, 2023, his wife had one of her best days and even built a snowman in the yard.
He said he felt hopeful after her release from the hospital. Prosecutors alleged that Lindsay Clancy sent Patrick on errands to keep him away from the house.
Prosecutors argued that the errands were evidence that she planned to create an opportunity to be alone with the children. The defense rejected that interpretation and argued that her actions must be viewed in the context of her worsening psychiatric condition.
Patrick returned from picking up dinner and found Lindsay outside after she had jumped from an upstairs window. He then discovered the children in the basement. Cora and Dawson died that night. Callan survived for four more days before dying at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Patrick told “60 Minutes” that he continues to speak to his children as a way of staying connected to them. He has since remarried. He and his wife Dr. Rachel Danis said during the interview that they are starting a family.
Prosecutors have not yet announced whether Lindsay Clancy will face a second trial. A court hearing is scheduled for September 29 to discuss the next steps in the case.
