Luca Guadagnino’s new film Artificial is set to make its world premiere at the upcoming New York Film Festival. The movie centers on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and stars Andrew Garfield in the role. The film had been dropped by Amazon MGM earlier this year, drawing criticism after Amazon signed a major partnership deal with OpenAI.
Neon has now picked up the project and will showcase it at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on October 5, according to TheWrap. The film features a star-studded cast including Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Chris O’Dowd. It is written by Simon Rich, known for Miracle Workers and Man Seeking Woman.
The story follows Altman’s time at OpenAI when he was fired and then reinstated by the company. In addition to Garfield as Altman, Barinholtz plays Elon Musk, Barbaro portrays CTO Mira Murati, and Borisov takes on the role of Ilya Sutskever. This marks a return for Guadagnino to the festival, as his last film After the Hunt opened the event in 2025.
The New York Film Festival runs from September 25 through October 12 this year. NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim praised the film for its tone and approach to the AI topic. Lim said the movie shows a clear-eyed look at how we reached the current moment with artificial intelligence.
The film explores themes of existential urgency and dark humor while examining the tech landscape. Artificial joins a lineup of other notable titles at this year’s festival. Blue Beetle actor Xolo Maridueña shared news about the superhero’s future on the red carpet for Practical Magic 2, according to a report from The A.V. Club.
He confirmed that Blue Beetle will continue in the DC universe after the collapse of Zack Snyder’s DCEU. The character has been a fan favorite for his relatability and underdog status within the larger superhero world. Despite the crowded superhero landscape, Blue Beetle’s story is expected to continue with new creative direction.
