Nicolás Maduro has shared images from his time in a New York prison, showing himself in a gray tracksuit and making peace signs with his hands. The photos were taken while he was held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn. He posted a message that said, ‘We are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love,’ in Spanish. Maduro also expressed gratitude for the support he receives from his followers and added that God will provide for Venezuela. He concluded by saying that Venezuela will rise again and that he remains calm and confident in the face of challenges.

Maduro’s trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027, in a federal court in New York, a federal court in New York announced in late July, according to CBS News. Both Maduro and his wife have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. He previously stated in court that he was innocent and called himself a decent man and constitutional president of Venezuela.

The trial follows an agreement between the United States and Venezuela that allows the U.S. to operate oil fields in the country. President Trump said this deal allows the U.S. to gain control of proven oil from Venezuela. He also mentioned that he plans to use some of the oil to refill the Strategic National Reserves which had been reduced under former President Biden. The joint venture will see the U.S. government control about 55% of the operation through equity and access rights to oil at cost.

During his time in office from 2013 to 2026, Maduro was accused of political persecution, including ordering arbitrary detentions and extra-judicial killings, according to a report from Yahoo News. Venezuela holds the world’s largest unproven crude oil reserves, according to reports. In Caracas, dozens of pro-government groups held protests against U.S. influence in Venezuela on Saturday. The situation has drawn attention to how international politics and legal proceedings intersect in Venezuela’s ongoing political crisis.
