The Jacksonville Jaguars have acquired quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins in a trade finalized before the team’s pre-cut deadline. The details of the deal have not been fully revealed yet, but it is understood that the Dolphins will receive a 2028 sixth-round draft pick in return. Ewers, a 22-year-old former Ohio State recruit who transferred to Texas in 2022, appeared in four games for the Dolphins in 2025.
He started three of those games and was considered a potential future starter, though he suffered a groin injury early in the season, according to NFL.com. That injury limited his participation in the rest of the preseason, and he did not play in the final two games. Despite the injury, Ewers had shown promise as a backup and was expected to be part of Miami’s quarterback development plan.
The Dolphins signed Mark Gronowski after Ewers went down, leaving the team short on backup options for the rest of the preseason, according to a report from NBC Sports. In addition to Ewers’ departure, the Dolphins also placed Jamaree Salyer on injured reserve due to a season-ending injury. The Jaguars are now adding Ewers as an important insurance policy behind Trevor Lawrence, who is expected to be their starter in the upcoming season.
Ewers’ role will likely be to provide depth and insurance for Lawrence, especially as the team continues building its roster. The move is seen as beneficial for both teams, with Miami focusing on a rebuild and Jacksonville gaining a young quarterback with potential. Ewers earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2024 and was selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Yardbarker reported.
During his time with Miami, he completed 1 of 8 passes for 27 yards and an interception in his first game. He also started the final three games of last season, going 1-2 with 622 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. The Dolphins are now left with Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski as backups behind starter Malik Willis.
It remains to be seen what the trade means for Nick Mullens, Carter Bradley, and Joey Aguilar. The Dolphins have also made other moves in the offseason, including waiving CB Ethan Robinson and signing LB Cam Riley. This trade reflects a strategic decision by both teams as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
