RFK Jr. Questions Pennsylvania Measles Deaths Report Amid Controversy

Robert Kennedy Jr. in Urbana, IL

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has raised questions about the official report on measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania, prompting a public exchange with state health officials. The controversy centers around two reported cases involving a newborn who died shortly after birth and an adult who reportedly succumbed to complications from measles infection. Lancaster County’s coroner, Dr. Stephen Diamantoni, confirmed that a male infant died of a splenatic rupture and tested positive for measles but not due to the disease. He also stated that the child’s parents may be unaware of their son’s death becoming part of a national narrative.

The infant was born at a birthing center in Christiana Borough on August 14th, located in the eastern part of Lancaster County. Diamantoni noted that while the child tested positive for measles, it was not the cause of death, and he could not determine the exact reason behind the spleen injury. He emphasized that the MMR vaccine is recommended at 12 months of age and provides high effectiveness against measles infections. State health officials adjusted the vaccination recommendation to give infants in affected counties their first dose at six months. The state’s health department said that the infant case was one of two it referred to in its report, but the county coroner has not yet confirmed any measles-related deaths within Lancaster County. The discrepancy between state and local records may stem from delays in reporting or patients being treated outside the county. Other counties bordering Lancaster County have also reported no measles-related deaths, according to local coroners.

Kennedy Jr. has been active in public events with Florida Republican officials ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, according to therecordherald.com. He criticized the CDC’s handling of the outbreak and defended the safety of vaccines, asserting that the U.S. is doing better than most countries in controlling measles cases. Kennedy also pointed to recent data showing a rise in non-medical vaccination exemptions among kindergarteners across the nation. He noted that Florida has reported 142 measles cases, ranking fifth nationally behind South Carolina, Utah, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. During an interview with a Phoenix reporter, Kennedy mentioned outbreaks linked to illegal immigration in Chicago and El Paso, Texas. His visit to Florida coincided with the release of a proposed regulation that would remove four vaccines from required school enrollment lists.

The CDC has responded by emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting and transparency in public health data, according to a report from Politico. It stated that if there is a weak connection between measles and reported deaths, it should be clearly stated rather than ignored. The agency also noted that Dr. Shapiro has declined their offer of assistance in reviewing the data. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and state officials have exchanged sharp comments online over the MMR vaccine on Wednesday night, lancasteronline.com reported.

The debate continues as more details emerge about how measles cases are being tracked and reported across Pennsylvania.
