Soccer Roundup: Chelsea, Roma and Lazio Headline Monday’s Biggest Results

Wide soccer scoreboard graphic showing 10 major results from August 24, 2026, including Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham, Roma’s 4-0 victory over Fiorentina, Lazio’s win over Bologna, and DFB-Pokal results.

Ten matches were played across the major European competitions covered Monday, with Chelsea winning a five-goal London derby, Roma opening Serie A with a four-goal rout and Wolfsburg surviving a dramatic DFB-Pokal scare.

Monday, August 24, 2026 featured 10 first-team matches across the major European competitions covered in this roundup: one Premier League match, two La Liga games, two Serie A matches, one Primeira Liga game and four DFB-Pokal ties. Rather than covering every result equally, several games clearly stood above the rest.

1. Chelsea 3, Fulham 2

Chelsea opened the Xabi Alonso era with a 3-2 victory over Fulham in a dramatic West London derby at Craven Cottage.

João Pedro gave Chelsea an extraordinary start, scoring only 31 seconds into the match. Fulham responded through Josh King in the 24th minute, but Chelsea regained the advantage when club-record signing Morgan Rogers scored on his debut.

Cole Palmer made it 3-1 shortly after halftime before Fulham newcomer Gonzalo García headed in to cut the deficit to one. Fulham pushed for an equalizer, but Chelsea held on to give Alonso a victory in his first competitive match as manager.

The performance also offered an early glimpse of Chelsea’s new attacking combination of João Pedro, Rogers and Palmer, with all three finding the net in the season opener.

2. Roma 4, Fiorentina 0

Roma delivered Monday’s most convincing victory, dismantling Fiorentina 4-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in their Serie A opener.

Donyell Malen scored a hat trick, with Paulo Dybala supplying the assist on all three goals. Malen opened the scoring in the 27th minute and struck twice more after halftime, scoring in the 53rd and 60th minutes.

Niccolò Pisilli completed the rout in the 86th minute.

The result gave Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma an emphatic three points to begin the campaign. Fiorentina, meanwhile, endured a difficult competitive debut under new manager Fabio Grosso.

Roma could hardly have asked for a stronger opening statement, scoring four times without conceding and immediately putting itself among the early Serie A leaders.

3. Lazio 1, Bologna 0

Lazio also began its Serie A season with a victory, defeating Bologna 1-0 at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

The game remained scoreless through the first half before summer signing Davide Frattesi came off the bench and scored the decisive goal in the 59th minute. Boulaye Dia provided the assist.

Bologna increased the pressure late and came close to equalizing. Federico Bernardeschi saw a free kick denied by goalkeeper Christos Mandas and the post, while Lazio survived several additional chances during the closing stages.

Mandas produced another important save in stoppage time to preserve the shutout.

The victory gave new Lazio manager Gennaro Gattuso three points in his first Serie A match in charge.

4. Wolfsburg Survives Altglienicke in Penalty Shootout

One of Monday’s most dramatic matches came in Germany, where fourth-tier VSG Altglienicke nearly eliminated Wolfsburg from the DFB-Pokal.

Altglienicke led three separate times, but Wolfsburg answered on each occasion. The game finished 3-3 after 120 minutes and went to penalties.

Maximilian Arnold scored twice during regulation and extra time for Wolfsburg, while Hauke Wahl produced another late equalizer in the 117th minute after Altglienicke had gone ahead for the third time.

Goalkeeper Jakub Zielinski then became Wolfsburg’s hero in the shootout, saving two penalties before Kilian Fischer converted the decisive kick.

Wolfsburg escaped into the second round, but Altglienicke came remarkably close to producing one of the early tournament’s biggest upsets.

5. Schalke 5, Hallescher FC 2 — Extra Time

Schalke also encountered far more resistance than expected in its DFB-Pokal opener.

Hallescher FC forced the match into extra time after the teams finished regulation tied 2-2. Schalke then took control during the additional 30 minutes and scored three unanswered goals to win 5-2.

The final score made the victory look relatively comfortable, but Schalke had been in genuine danger of elimination before breaking the match open in extra time.

The result sent Schalke into the second round alongside Wolfsburg, Hamburger SV and Köln, the four winners from Monday’s DFB-Pokal schedule. Hamburg defeated Verl 3-0, while Köln came from behind to beat Würzburger Kickers 2-1.

6. Málaga 1, Deportivo La Coruña 1

Two newly promoted clubs met in La Liga as Málaga hosted Deportivo La Coruña at La Rosaleda.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Deportivo ahead in the 21st minute, but Málaga answered before halftime when Chupe converted a penalty in the 34th.

Neither side found a winner during the second half, leaving the teams with a 1-1 draw.

For Málaga, the match marked the return of top-flight soccer to La Rosaleda. Deportivo earned its second point from its opening two matches after returning to Spain’s top division.

7. Osasuna 0, Levante 0

The other La Liga game finished scoreless as Osasuna and Levante played to a 0-0 draw at El Sadar.

Osasuna generated seven shots on target but could not beat Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. Levante created opportunities of its own but also failed to score.

The result gave Levante its first point of the season, while Osasuna took a point from its delayed opening match of the campaign.

Other Results

Gil Vicente defeated Casa Pia 2-0 in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. Gil Martins opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Héctor Hernández converted a penalty just before halftime. Gil Vicente protected the two-goal advantage throughout the second half.

In the remaining DFB-Pokal matches, Hamburger SV defeated Verl 3-0 and Köln beat Würzburger Kickers 2-1.

Monday’s biggest performance belonged to Roma and Donyell Malen, while Chelsea’s five-goal derby against Fulham provided the most prominent Premier League storyline. In Germany, the DFB-Pokal again demonstrated why early-round cup games can be so unpredictable, with both Wolfsburg and Schalke needing considerably more than 90 minutes to survive lower-division opposition.
