The New Orleans Saints are facing a setback with their top pick from the 2026 NFL Draft after rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson suffered a hamstring injury during training camp. Tyson is expected to be sidelined for approximately two months, according to reports from NFL Media.
The injury happened during a practice last week when Tyson caught a pass and landed awkwardly on the field, according to ESPN. He attempted to get up and test his leg before jogging off with athletic trainers.
Saints coach Kellen Moore said the injury was not related to Tyson’s past history or performance, according to a report from CBS Sports. Moore emphasized that the incident occurred when his foot slipped and he was shoved from behind.
He added that such injuries are part of the risks involved in training camp football. Tyson was praised by his coach for his strong performance during camp and said he would continue to improve.
The Saints selected Tyson with the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft. His absence is a significant loss for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
In his place, DeVaughn Vele is expected to take on more receiver duties. Vele had been playing in that role after the Saints traded Rashid Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks midseason.
Other rookies on the roster include Bryce Lance and Barion Brown who could step up if needed. It is possible one of them might earn a bigger role during Tyson’s extended time away.
The Saints may also look to the free-agent market or trade options for additional wide receiver depth. Tyson’s injury occurred just before the team was set to begin its season at Detroit on September 13.
That timing puts his return around Week 6, which would be before the Saints play the New York Giants. Despite the setback, fans and analysts still see potential in Tyson as a key part of the Saints’ offensive plans, ClutchPoints reported.
With quarterback Tyler Shough expected to lead the team, many believe Tyson could help unlock more of Moore’s offensive system. Tyson was known for his versatility, able to play multiple wideout positions including the slot.
Chris Olave remains as a reliable target for the Saints, offering a proven 1,000-yard option. The injury is not considered to be season-ending, giving the team hope that Tyson will return before the season begins.
Saints players and staff are keeping a close eye on his recovery as they continue preparing for the season.
