West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose above $85 a barrel, closing at its highest level since late July. Brent crude futures settled just below $91 per barrel, reflecting growing concerns about supply disruptions in the region. The increase came shortly after comments from a U.S. leader, which sparked market reactions and led to a sharp rise in oil benchmarks. The memorandum that was referenced had been signed in June and was set to expire on Monday, marking a key moment for the energy sector.

International oil prices surged past $91 per barrel after remarks made by the U.S. president, which added to market uncertainty. The president’s comments coincided with rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, where several oil tankers have reportedly been attacked recently. Market indexes dropped further after the president’s remarks, as investors reacted to the worsening situation in the region. Treasury yields also moved toward their highest levels of the day, reflecting investor anxiety over global economic stability.

The Strait of Hormuz saw a sharp decline in ship traffic, with only three vessels passing through on Sunday, down from ten on Saturday. Ship movements in the area dropped by 19.5 percent compared to the previous week, showing a significant reduction in commercial activity. The U.S. government had previously stated that oil prices would fall sharply once a conflict with Iran ended, but recent developments have contradicted this view.

Since a 60-day memorandum with Iran was signed in June, oil prices have been highly volatile and have since rebounded. Prices had returned to near prewar levels in early July before rising again, with no clear end to the conflict in sight. The situation has led to a sharp increase in gas prices for consumers, with some areas seeing hikes of over 36% since the conflict began. Oil prices are now nearly 50% higher than they were at the beginning of the year and more than 25% above February levels.

The ongoing conflict has raised concerns about how long the disruption to shipping lanes will last and what it could mean for global energy markets. Analysts are watching closely to see if additional measures, such as naval blockades or military actions, could further affect oil supply chains, according to NBC News. The U.S. has maintained that it controls the critical Strait of Hormuz, but recent developments suggest a more complex situation.

The region’s importance to global oil trade means that even small disruptions can cause significant price swings in international markets. Investors and energy companies are closely monitoring the situation, as uncertainty continues to drive volatility in crude prices.
