OpenAI recently organized a weekend retreat for content creators at a high-end resort in upstate New York. The event took place at Wildflower Farms, a private venue that charges more than a thousand dollars per night for its cabins. Attendees were treated to gourmet meals, workshops, and group dinners in a natural setting surrounded by meadows and woodlands. Some of the influencers shared their experiences on social media, posting photos and videos from the event.

The company described the trip as a way to educate creators about its latest product, ChatGPT Work. This was part of a broader strategy to promote the company’s tools through trusted voices in the digital space.

However, many people took issue with the contrast between the luxury setting and the environmental concerns tied to AI technology. Critics pointed out that AI systems require massive data centers, which are known to use large amounts of electricity and water. The resort where the event was held sits on 140 acres of land, surrounded by orchards and views of the Shawangunk Ridge. Some users noted that the peaceful environment made the situation feel ironic, especially given AI’s impact on natural resources.

Social media users began questioning why influencers were attending the event and how it aligned with their values. One influencer, Grace McCarrick, responded to criticism by saying she was excited about AI and had not compromised her morals. She also referred to the backlash as a form of ‘AI psychosis,’ suggesting she did not expect such strong reactions.

Other influencers defended their participation, saying they wanted to learn more about the technology and engage in meaningful discussions. Some questioned whether the company was trying to shape public opinion by bringing creators into the conversation. The event also came at a time when OpenAI is working to improve its public image amid growing scrutiny of AI’s environmental footprint.

In response, the company introduced a new data center project in Georgia called Project Camellia. It promised that this facility would use minimal water and not increase local electricity costs. The company said it hoped to build trust through early involvement with the community.

This retreat followed a pattern of using influencers to promote AI products, similar to past efforts by other tech companies. Companies like Shein and Tarte have faced criticism for sending creators on trips that were seen as promotional rather than transparent.

OpenAI’s approach shows a growing trend of using brand events to shape narratives around emerging technologies. The company hired a former Instagram executive to lead its global creative partnerships, signaling the importance of influencer engagement.

The event was designed to get people talking about OpenAI, but the conversation quickly turned into criticism. Some influencers were surprised by the level of backlash and questioned whether their participation was seen as crossing a line.

The company’s spokesperson emphasized that it values open dialogue and welcomes debate about AI’s future. Despite the controversy, the retreat did succeed in generating significant attention for OpenAI’s work.

Whether this kind of event will help or hurt the company’s reputation remains to be seen.
